On last night’s episode of Love Island, dressage rider Gemma Owen and business owner Davide Sanclimenti went on their first date after coupling up.
What should have been a romantic day out away from the other islanders ended up being a somewhat awkward encounter… when Gemma appeared to avoid looking Davide in the eye.
Her failure to gaze directly at her date didn’t go unnoticed by viewers, including the presenters on Good Morning Britain the following morning.
While discussing what went down in the latest episode of Love Island, Richard Arnold said: ‘In other news, Davide could do with getting in a lather with Gemma.’
He appeared to reference the eight-year age gap between the pair, as he continued, saying: ‘They went on their first school trip together. It was a date, a little bit zesty. The pair made lemonade discussing marriage and babies whilst Davide tried to get a bit of basic eye action from Gemma… without much luck.’
A clip was then shown from the date, showing Gemma avoiding eye contact, while a song with the lyrics ‘look at me’ played in the background.
After the cameras returned to the ITV studio, Kate Garraway quipped that Davide ‘should have just jumped in there and started licking her like an ice cream’, having previously watched a clip of Love Island stars Dami Hope and Amber Beckford playing a game of tonsil tennis.
‘That would be the only option at that point I think!’ she added, as Richard remarked: ‘When life gives you lemons, Davide makes limoncello I say.’
Several people watching Love Island last night addressed the odd dynamic between Gemma and Davide on their date, with one person tweeting: ‘Is it me or does Gemma literally never look at Davide when she speaks to him? Is there something interesting in the distance or what haha.’
‘I get the impression Gemma is not actually happy being with Davide, she looks very uncomfortable and it is very awkward between them,’ someone else suggested.
Another person bemused by the date asked: ‘Wth even are Davide and Gemma. They don’t even look at each other when they talk.’
‘There is ZERO chemistry between Gemma and Davide. They didn’t even look at each other once on that date,’ a fan added.
Gemma was previously keen to couple up with Davide when he entered the villa as the first bombshell of the 2022 series, meaning that her previous partner, masters student Liam Llewellyn, was now single.
However, Liam’s luck could be turning following the arrival of two more bombshells, who he’s due to go on dates with in tonight’s episode.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV. Love Island returns tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub.
