Loose Women star Coleen Nolan has thrown her support behind government’s new holiday restrictions which are due to come into force this week.
UK arrivals who flout Government travel rules will face up to £10,000 in fines or a decade in prison.
Speaking on Wednesday’s show, the panel were discussing the new rules and whether they are ‘too harsh’.
Coleen explained to her co-stars that she is all for the new rules as she ‘can’t stand’ the coronavirus pandemic any more.
‘What do you make of this?’ Ruth Langsford asked Coleen. ‘Do you think it will make people think? Is it going to be a deterrent, you could face these huge fines, but 10 years, a possible 10-year jail sentence.’
‘I can’t imagine anyone going for 10 years,’ Coleen began.
‘But I think anything that makes people think twice about people breaking the rules, they’ve got to do it.
‘We have to get out of this. I can’t stand it anymore, I mean, I am sick of talking about it, Ruth.’
The new restrictions will mean that travellers who fail to quarantine in Government approved hotels after coming from red-list countries can be fined up to £10,000 under strict new rules.
Those who attempt to hide a visit to a red-list country could be sentenced to up to 10 years in jail.
Arrivals who fail to take a first mandatory Covid test face a fine of £1,000, while this will rise to £2,000 for not taking a second test.
The measures are set to come into force this week in England, although discussions are ongoing with the devolved nations to implement similar systems.
Matt Hancock set out the harsh new penalties in the Commons today, amid fears more cases of highly infectious Covid strains will enter the country.
The health secretary said he ‘made no apologies for the strength of these measures because we’re dealing with one of the strongest threats to our public health that we’ve faced as a nation’.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
