Loki makes epic throwback to first Avengers film in new teaser for Marvel series

A new teaser has been released for upcoming Marvel series Loki, featuring the MCU’s resident trickster making an epic throwback to the first Avengers film.

On June 11, the Tom Hiddleston-led show Loki is set to launch on Disney Plus, following on from the hugely popular releases WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

The TV series is set straight after Loki’s last appearance in Avengers: Endgame, when the 2012 version of the character stole the Tesseract (otherwise known as the Space Stone) and disappeared after being captured by the Avengers during the Battle of New York.

During Monday’s Marvel-themed NBA game between the Golden State Warriors and the New Orleans Pelicans, a new TV spot was unveiled, showing a closer look at Owen Wilson and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Time Variance Authority workers Mobius M Mobius and Ravonna Lexus Renslayer respectively.

The footage also showed a moment where Loki references a famous line he uttered in the first Avengers film, when he and then-director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) came face-to-face for the first time.

In the clip from Loki, the adopted brother of Thor says: ‘I am Loki, and I am burdened with glorious purpose.’

This line is an almost identical copy to the phrase he said to Fury, when he stated: ‘I am Loki, of Asgard, and I am burdened with glorious purpose.’

The first time Loki said the line, he had been hellbent on taking over Earth with the help of an alien race called the Chitauri.

As the Loki that we meet in the upcoming Marvel series is this old version of the character – who has not experienced the redemptive arc that Loki goes through in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War – for all we know, he might still have the same motive that he did nine years ago.

In the Loki teaser, Gugu’s character, who serves as a judge for the TVA, expresses her concern over the organisation placing trust in him to help correct the timeline.

‘Maybe Loki wants to mix it up, is that possible? He can change?’ Mobius says.

‘This variant is insubordinate, stubborn, unpredictable,’ Ravonna affirms.

Despite wanting to give Loki a chance, Mobius acknowledges that there is a lot of work to do.

‘Unbelievable! Wherever you go, it’s just death, destruction, the literal ends of worlds!’ he tells the God of Mischief.

‘I know,’ Loki coolly replies.

Loki is set to launch on Disney Plus on Friday June 11.
