If there’s one thing you don’t want to do, it’s get on the wrong side of Line of Duty’s AC-12… even Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The politician has faced intense scrutiny over the alleged parties held at Downing Street during lockdowns, when people across the UK were adhering to strict Covid-19 restrictions.

Last week during Prime Minister’s Questions in Parliament, he apologised for attending a party in the garden of No 10, but insisted that he thought it was a ‘work event’.

While members of the public await the findings of the investigation being carried out by civil servant Sue Gray, a new video that’s gone viral on Twitter revealed what an interrogation of Mr Johnson conducted by Line of Duty’s anti-corruption unit AC-12 would look like if it played out on the BBC drama – and the results are gripping to say the least.

In the clip created by anti-Brexit politician campaign group Led By Donkeys, the PM sits in the interrogation room while facing Steve Arnott (Martin Compston), Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) and Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure), with the police officers staring the politician down with steely glares.

Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio shared the video on Twitter, describing it as ‘brilliant work’ as the trio grill Mr Johnson with evidence including screengrabs of the leaked email about a party where 100 Downing Street staff were invited and a picture of the PM supposedly attending a Christmas quiz.

After bringing up the email, Mr Johnson – who’s been superimposed into the AC-12 office – replies: ‘All that is subject for an interview… er, for an investigation by Sue Gray.’

‘We’ve investigated it. And the facts are plain for everyone to see,’ Ted responds, in his typically no-nonsense manner.

‘Sir, a gathering like the one described in LBD-1 would have been a breach of the Health Protection Regulations in operation at the time. As well you know,’ Steve says, as the footage of Mr Johnson cleverly incorporated into the video shakes his head.

‘All the evidence I can see is that people have stayed within the rules. If that turns out not to be the case, and people wish to bring allegations to my attention or to the police or whoever, then of course there will be a proper sanction,’ the PM says, as Ted appears to sigh.

Voiceovers from the actors emphasised the sacrifices that people had to make during lockdowns, from not being able to visit sick relatives to not being able to gather to bury loved ones and cancelling weddings.

‘It wasn’t just a case of one rule for us, and another for them. It was more like, “No rules for us”!’ Ted exclaims, as the camera zoomed in closely on his face.

A clip was then shown of Mr Johnson saying sorry, as he did in Parliament, as Steve responded: ‘The only thing you’re sorry about is you got caught.’

‘Flipping heck! That is AWESOME! Well done all of you,’ one person tweeted.

‘Mother of god! Truly brilliant,’ another said, while someone else quoted a line said by Ted in Line of Duty that was used in the clip, which was: ‘Your corruption was mistaken for incompetence.’

Line of Duty is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
