Line Of Duty series 6 aired its finale episode on Sunday, with the nation currently in the dark about whether or not it will be returning for another season.

The latest chapter of Jed Mercurio’s acclaimed police drama finally revealed that Ian Buckells was H, also known as the Fourth Man, with Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure), Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) and Ted Hastings’ (Adrian Dunbar) AC-12 left hanging in the balance.

There were a number of jump-out-your-seat moments ahead of the last episode too, with Jo Davidson (Kelly Macdonald) learning that not only is she related to Tommy Hunter (Brian McCardie), but she’s also his daughter and niece.

Elsewhere, bent copper and Organised Crime Group member Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper) went up against Kate in a gripping gun showdown, with fatal consequences.

Naturally, viewers have been left asking whether series seven is on the horizon. While it’s not been confirmed just yet, we’ve got everything you need to know about what’s been said.

What has the cast said about Line Of Duty series 7?

Speaking ahead of the launch of series six, Adrian Dunbar, who plays AC-12 boss Superintendent Ted Hastings, explained that the stars of the show believe another series is necessary for the narrative.

‘It was very tricky and I think Vicky [McClure] said something which I would absolutely roll in behind, which is that we can’t really stop now, we’ve got to do another series,’ he said.

Steve Arnott actor Martin Compston added: ‘I think Jed always took each series one by one because he wants to judge the reaction of the audience. Right now, it could end and we could come back.

‘But as I think we’ve alluded to before, just on a personal level, it would be a shame to end it this way. We’ve said it’s such a sociable job and us all hanging out together has become such a big aspect, we’re such close friends, and I’ll include Jed in that.’

In February, show creator Jed Mercurio also suggested that Line Of Duty will continue beyond the sixth series.

Talking on the Out To Lunch Podcast, he said: ‘What I do know is that season six proves there is much more ground for us still to cover and then in terms of other projects… I really want to carry on with Line of Duty as I think it still got some ground to cover.’

More recently, Nigel Boyle who plays Ian Buckells told Phillip Schofield and Rochelle Humes that the cast is keen to return for another innings shortly after he was revealed as H.

‘Don’t forget, we’re all fans of the show as well,’ Nigel replied. ‘Of course, we want another one.’

The BBC’s chief content officer has hinted at more Line Of Duty episodes in the future following its record-breaking success.

Charlotte Moore said: ‘Addictive event television, Line Of Duty has kept the nation guessing for the last seven weeks, so it’s no surprise that last night’s jaw-dropping finale set a ratings record.

‘Jed Mercurio is a master of his craft, and I would like to congratulate him and the entire cast and crew for delivering such an incredible drama series. I’m looking forward to having a conversation with the team about where we go next and what the future of the series might be.’

When could the Line of Duty series 7 release date be?

Line Of Duty fans could be waiting up to two years for series seven should it get the greenlight, judging its past releases.

The show’s sixth season arrived two years after season five, which aired in 2019 and two years after series four.

Line Of Duty is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
