Lily Collins reveals she was pronouncing Emily in Paris wrong as she weighs in on debate

Lily Collins has shared that she – along with many others – was saying Emily in Paris wrong, after it was revealed that the title of the TV programme is supposed to be pronounced with a French accent.

In early October, the first season of Emily in Paris was released on Netflix, following protagonist Emily as she moves from America to Paris to work at a marketing firm, finding friendship and love along the way.

The show has sparked several debates since its launch, one of them regarding the ‘stereotypical’ portrayal of people living in Paris, which some have described as ‘rude’.

There has also been much discussion about the proper way to say the title – a topic Lily weighed in on during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

During their video chat, Jimmy referenced a tweet the official Twitter account for Netflix shared in early November, which read: ‘Friendly reminder Emily in Paris is supposed to be pronounced with a French accent so ‘Emily’ and ‘Paris’ rhyme.’

This revelation took many people aback, including the star of the series, Lily.

The actor, 31, explained to Jimmy that when they were filming the show in the French capital, she heard people referencing it in that way because they were, of course, in France.

However, she didn’t realise that was the proper way you are supposed to pronounce the title.

‘Here’s the thing. When we were shooting in Paris, we heard people referencing as that more often, right? ‘Cause we’re in Paris, and the accent. I was like, ‘Oh yeah it rhymes, that’s cute,’’ she said.

‘Literally forgot about it. Came back home. It was never like a big thing and then I felt like I was one with every single other person in the world that found that out the same day, ‘cause I was like, ‘Wait, have I been saying it wrong?’

Lily explained that she had been one of many incorrectly saying Emily in Paris without the French accent.

‘And I was like, ‘Oh my god, I fell for it.’ I’m Emily, and I even was saying it wrong.’

The Love, Rosie star added that she believes the gaffe is something her character Emily would have also made, stating: ‘I feel like that’s actually something Emily herself would be like, ‘Well, I guess I was part of the joke.’

Last month, it was announced that Emily in Paris had been renewed for a second season, despite the backlash it received.

Lily previously addressed the criticism during an interview with Vogue Arabia, telling the fashion publication: ‘As disheartening as it sometimes is to read these things, it’s also a gift; you’re being allowed to improve.’
