Lewis Capaldi has claimed that the original edit of his upcoming Netflix documentary was so ‘depressing’ that he wondered whether he’d be dead by the end.
Earlier this month, the Scottish musician revealed that he was being trailed by a camera team for the film How I’m Feeling Now.
Lewis reveals the ups and downs of his work and personal life in the all-access documentary, “returning to his roots after achieving unbelievable global success” and “attempting to reconnect with his old life and the family and friends he left behind.”
However, when asked about the documentary, which will be published next month, Lewis admitted on This Morning on Friday that he hard to watch it at first.
‘It’s quite a depressing documentary if I’m being honest with you,’ he said.
‘When I watched the first draft I was surprised and wondered if I died at the end of it.
‘I was like “wait”, because it is quite sad, but we did end up filming some extra bits.’
He added: ‘My mental health, I didn’t realise how much my anxiety and other things I struggle with coloured my life, so it was weird to watch it back.
But, as is his wont, Lewis cracked a few jokes and hinted that his father was videotaped sobbing for the film, which he called “embarrassing.”
‘I think he should be ashamed of that,’ he quipped.
Lewis also discussed how seeing the video opened his eyes and drove him to confront his mental and physical health issues, prompting him to begin counselling.
‘I saw something and thought it was having an effect on not only me, but the people around me,’ he said.
Lewis also mentioned experiencing dizziness shortly after being diagnosed with bronchitis at the start of the interview.
But he quipped that all he was doing on national television was “sharing his ailments.”
‘I’m expecting diarrohea too,’ he added.
However, he went on to claim that he was ‘pleased’ with the end product of his film, which was made more sweeter by all the money he gained from it.
While broadcasters Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary offered Lewis the opportunity to promote his upcoming second album Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent, he had other plans.
Lewis said it was a ‘blatant and total farce’ that he’d been given the green light to produce additional songs, staring into the camera to talk straight to his followers.
‘Don’t bother [buying it],’ he said.
‘Go buy Ed Sheeran’s latest offering.’
While he continued to explain that he was only performing the work to “pay the bills,” Lewis also considered another career option.
‘I’m not very good at anything else, except love making…,’ he shared.
Lewis chose a parody to announce his documentary, dressed up as renowned Netflix characters including Bridgerton, Squid Game, Tiger King, Orange is the New Black, Money Heist, and Wednesday Addams.
He subsequently revealed that the film was the’most emotive picture about an overweight person since The Whale,’ and that it had caught a ‘strange two and a half years’ of his life.
Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now is released on April 5 on Netflix.
This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
