LadBaby explain how they convinced Bob Geldof to let them change lyrics to Live Aid song for first time ever

LadBaby have explained what it was like getting Bob Geldof’s permission to alter the lyrics to his famous Live Aid track Do They Know It’s Christmas? – the first time he ever allow the change to happen.

This year, social media star Mark Hoyle – who’s known as LadBaby – and his wife Roxanne Hoyle – known online as LadBaby Mum – are vying for Christmas number one with their new track Food Aid, with all proceeds being donated to The Trussell Trust and Band Aid.

As implied by the title, the song is a spin on the charity song Do They Know It’s Christmas?, which was released in 1984 before Bob and Midge Ure’s benefit concert Live Aid the following year, which was organised to raise money to support those affected by famine in Ethiopia.

Receiving permission to change the lyrics might have seemed like a simple task, but it turns out it was actually quite a feat, considering Bob has never given authorisation in the past.

On Tuesday, Roxanne and Mark appeared on Lorraine to speak to stand-in host Ranvir Singh about the achievement.

‘Nobody’s ever been allowed to change the lyrics, right?’ an astounded Ranvir asked, as Mark confirmed her question by responding: ‘No!’

‘You got Bob Geldof to change his mind!’ the TV host stressed.

Mark then shed further light on how the interaction happened behind the scenes.

‘We were the first people who’ve been allowed to rewrite it, which is an honour in itself,’ he shared.

‘They didn’t hesitate. We sent the lyrics off that we wrote to Bob and Midge and they approved them straight away, they changed only one word.’

Clips were then shown of the song being recorded, which features the vocal talents of none other than money saving expert Martin Lewis.

‘Martin’s got the voice of an angel!’ Roxanne remarked.

The married duo also emphasised that they’re not receiving any payment from sales of the charity single, as 100% of the proceeds are being split between the two aforementioned charities.

Earlier this month, they praised Martin for his involvement on the track, as they battle it out on the charts amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.

‘We wanted to get someone involved that knows about the struggles that are facing a lot of families at the minute. He more than most helps everyone,’ Mark said.

‘He has helped me when I wanted to get my mortgage. He was the person I turned to, and I think a lot of people do.’

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
