Keeley Hawes has revealed her spouse, Succession star Matthew Macfadyen, underwent a drastic transformation for an upcoming role, where they’re set to play husband and wife on screen.
Earlier this year, it was announced that the real-life couple had been cast in ITV drama Stonehouse, depicting the unbelievable true life story about disgraced Labour MP John Stonehouse, who was found out after faking his own death.
Stonehouse, who was in Harold Wilson’s first Labour government from 1964, was presumed dead when he disappeared from a beach in Miami one day in 1974, leaving behind a pile of neatly-folded clothes.
While speaking on Tuesday’s Lorraine, Keeley – who previously starred in The Bodyguard, It’s A Sin and Line of Duty – shared that they had ‘just wrapped’ filming on Stonehouse.
She explained that working with her husband was ‘easier’ than she had initially expected, thanks to Matthew’s physical transformation.
‘It was great fun. We haven’t worked together for a long time, and we just, you never know how it’s going to be, and it was great. We just had a ball. Matthew looks completely different,’ she said.
‘It’s a real physical transformation, so it was sort of easier than I thought. If he looked like himself it might have been more difficult in a way or if it was a modern piece.’
Going into further detail about how Matthew looks in the role of Stonehouse, Keeley outlined that his ‘eye colour’s different’ and he’s wearing fake teeth, facial hair and wigs.
‘It’s great fun, I can’t wait for people to see it,’ she added.
While talking about Stonehouse, Lorraine likened the story to The Man, His Wife and The Canoe, another true-life story dramatised on ITV where a man faked his own death but was later caught.
‘We’ve just wrapped on a show for ITV called Stonehouse, which is a three-parter hopefully out by the end of the year,’ Keeley said.
‘Matthew’s playing a Labour MP, it’s set in the 70s. It’s a true story of an MP called John Stonehouse and I play his wife Barbara, and it’s one of those stories that is just difficult to believe that’s true, it’s all true, and he faked his own death.’
‘Fantastic, that’ll be really good,’ Lorraine remarked.
Keeley and Matthew previously starred together in comedy Death at a Funeral and spy drama Spooks.
They’ve been married since 2004 and share two children. Keeley has an older child from her previous marriage to DJ Spencer McCallum.
Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
