Katie Price is concerned that her son Harvey would be unable to obtain the career he wishes owing to attitudes towards handicap.
Harvey, 20, was born with septo-optic dysplasia, a rare disease that impairs his eyesight, brain function, and hormones, but Katie does not want his disability to prevent him from pursuing a profession. However, the mother of five is fast realising that it is not so simple.
‘Like many other young people with a disability he’s finding it difficult making the transition into adulthood – especially when it comes to getting a job,’ she explained.
‘I want nothing more than for Harvey to find his dream job – but because he needs so much support, I worry it won’t be possible.’
Katie, 44, and Harvey will investigate the potential benefits and drawbacks in a one-off episode for BBC’s The One Show.
The two head to Wakefield to discover more about DFN Project Search, a programme that provides work experience opportunities for handicapped individuals at commercial and public businesses, including over 35 NHS hospital trusts. Harvey jumps right in, scrubbing a floor to demonstrate his eagerness to work.
They also have the opportunity to meet handicapped persons who have found employment, as well as their families.
The experience left Katie feeling hopeful: ‘After meeting the families today I realise that Harvey can get a fulfilling job and hopefully he’ll be able to get the independence he desperately strives for.’
This isn’t Katie’s only BBC project; she’s also in discussions to host a new programme alongside her 15-year-old daughter Princess about growing up with a celebrity mother. Katie also has three children: Junior, 17, Jett, 8, and Bunny, 9.
According to The Mirror, Katie has been in discussions with the BBC about the project, which would follow Princess around the time of her 16th birthday next month.
A source told the outlet: ‘Katie’s had huge success with her documentaries with Harvey and believes this would be just as impactful.
‘People are obsessed with the relationship between her and Princess, and all have their opinions – this will be their time to show what goes on behind closed doors.’
Katie and Harvey Price are on The One Show at 7pm, BBC One.
