Kate Garraway fought back tears during a special performance by Sam Ryder on Friday’s Good Morning Britain, having previously acknowledged she may ‘burst into tears’ at any time.
The 56-year-old, who was awarded an MBE earlier this week, joined Ben Shephard on Friday’s edition of the ITV daytime series, when she admitted she was feeling ’emotional’.
‘Kate, it was fantastic to see you at the palace the other day with Derek, honestly, it made my heart explode,’ said Labour MP Wes Streeting.
‘You really deserve it, it was lovely to see you there and it was lovely to see Derek celebrating with you.’
He continued: ‘And I know I speak not just for all of Derek’s friends in the Labour Party but right across parliament.
‘If there is one thing that can unite us all, it was just wonderful to see you there. You absolutely deserved it.
‘And to see Derek there smiling and supporting you was just brilliant, absolutely fantastic.’
‘Well, that’s all a testament, isn’t it, to the NHS,’ Kate remarked, visibly moved. So we all come back to the same place, and it was lovely to have our excellent nurse Jake there as well, and to have the Prince of Wales recognise him.
‘Thank you so much. I’m on a bit of a hair-trigger emotionally this morning Mr Streeting.’
‘I could burst into tears at any point, it’s all caught up with me, but thank you so, so much’ she added.
And she nearly did when Eurovision star Sam performed his new song in the studio.
Kate was left wiping away tears and exclaiming, ‘That has stunned me!’ Emotionally, I’m on pins and needles.
‘The lyrics and that voice! Sam you’ve finished me off.’
This comes after Kate stated that her husband Derek Draper cried with joy after she was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire at Windsor Castle.
The award honours Kate’s contributions to television, journalism, and philanthropy.
‘Derek fell into tears,’ said the TV personality on Thursday’s episode of the ITV show.
‘The lovely thing was Prince William said “how’s Derek?” and I said ‘here’s here!’ So we turned and saw and then obviously Derek was very tearful and then spoke about Jake [Derek’s carer] and gave Jake a wave as well.’
She continued: ‘Prince William said he wanted to go over but he’s not allowed to leave the rug. There’s a very fancy red and gold carpet that he stands on.
‘It was lovely at the castle there were so many people who wanted to shake Derek’s hand and say ‘my father, my husband my brother … what you’ve gone through has given us a lot of hope.
‘Because they are dealing with things from Covid but also other things like cancer which are difficult. So I think he got a huge amount from it as well, which was very very lovely.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
