After 8 Out of 10 Cats won the National Comedy Awards last night, Jon Richardson paid homage to Sean Lock, attributed the majority of the show’s hilarious success to his late co-star and friend.

The awards ceremony was held last night at London’s Roundhouse, and attendees included Rosie Jones, Katherine Ryan, Amelia Dimoldenberg, and Sandi Toksvig.

8 Out of 10 Cats competed against Mock the Week, QI, and Would I Lie to You? for the title of finest comedy panel show, with the former winning.

Following their triumph, Jon expressed his appreciation to the supporters who voted for them on Twitter.

‘Many thanks to everyone who voted for Cats Does Countdown at the Comedy Awards,’ stated the 40-year-old.

‘That one is for Sean, without whom the show would have had a fraction of the comedy it had and much more maths.’

Sean died in August 2021, at the age of 58, from lung cancer.

‘It is with tremendous regret that we have to announce the loss of Sean Lock,’ said Off The Kerb Productions at the time. He died of cancer at home, surrounded by his family.

‘Sean was one of Britain’s finest comedians, his boundless creativity, lightning wit and the absurdist brilliance of his work, marked him out as a unique voice in British comedy. Sean was also a cherished husband and father to three children.

‘Sean will be sorely missed by all that knew him. We kindly request that the privacy of his family and children is respected at this difficult time.’

In February of last year, Jon revealed that he was ‘upset’ during Sean’s final episode of Countdown since he knew his co-star was ill.

‘Watching Sean’s last ep of Countdown I can see how upset I was knowing he was ill and how much that affected my performance, while Sean himself continued to be effortlessly hilarious,’ he tweeted.

‘A true comic to the end. That’s why he’s trending on Twitter and why he’s so missed.’

Sean originally featured on 8 Out of 10 Cats in 2005, and later starred on the spin-off 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

At the British Comedy Awards in 2000, he was named best live comic.

8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown is available to watch on All 4.
