Jenna Ortega has emotionally shared how she’s been impacted by having her every action scrutinized on social media.
The actress, 20, started her career as a child actress before featuring in the second season of You and then going on to play Wednesday Addams in the extremely popular Netflix series of the same name.
However as her fame has grown, so have the pressures of fame and living life in the public eye.
During a recent conversation with The Great actress Elle Fanning, 25, for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, the pair talked about how toxic social media could be.
Expressing her feelings, Jenna said she became ‘very nervous’ to post or ‘say anything or be myself’ because it might be misunderstood.
‘That is a whole world people don’t prepare you for and because I tend to be naturally sarcastic or dry, it is very easy for me to get myself in trouble,’ she said.
‘You are thrown to the dogs.’
Jenna Ortega starts to cry as she talks to Elle Fanning about how toxic social media can be: "It's such a hard thing to balance. How do you be honest without jeopardizing your own health and safety? It's very easy to feel out of control." https://t.co/MqDrkNvpc6 pic.twitter.com/mb4L1q2RVv

The actress then remembered how that when she first started acting, her mum told her she needed to use her platform ‘for good’.
‘I had to be vocal about things that mattered to me or were important in the world and society and I had to get good grades,’ she said.
She then explained that as she started to establish her voice on social media, she started to be more ‘exposed’ to the world, and people had ‘preyed on that’.
‘They take advantage of that and they see your vulnerability and twist it in a way that you don’t always expect,’ she added.
At this point Jenna began crying and apologised to Elle, saying: ‘Sorry I don’t mean to do this.’
She added: ‘It’s a thing to balance because how do you be honest without jeopardising your own health and safety…it’s very easy to feel out of control of things, which is why I think it’s so important for people to get off their phone.’
While she said it felt ‘scary out there’, she was grateful for the support of her family and friends and had made an effort to take a break from her phone, and try to avoid reading any social media comments about her.
It’s not only trolls that Jenna has found herself under fire from in recent months.
Earlier this year, Jenna made headlines when she talked about the quality of writing
Jenna made waves earlier this year when she discussed the quality of writing on the blockbuster Netflix series and admitted she’started rewriting lines’.
After witnessing Jenna at the Met Gala, BoJack Horseman writer Nick Adams joked, ‘Jenna Ortega better be back from NY for her afternoon duty on the picket line.’
Yellowjackets writer Karen Joseph Adcock retweeted the tweet, suggesting that Jenna could join the Writers Guild of America strike, and added, ‘Rewriting is writing!’ ‘See you in queue, Jenna!’
During the protests, writer Brandon Cohen was seen with a banner that said, ‘Without writers, Jenna Ortega would have nothing to beat up!’
Wednesday is streaming on Netflix.
