For the first time in the show’s history, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are unable to compete in the Dancing On Ice final.

The skating legends, who serve on the show’s judging panel alongside dancers Ashley Banjo and Oti Mabuse, will not be skating as usual since Jayne ruptured a bicep tendon during preparations for the performance and has yet to recuperate sufficiently to put her skates back on.

She said: ‘I don’t think I have ever had an injury that’s stopped me doing what we were meant to be doing before.

‘We were three days from recording this routine, we had been working on it for weeks and weeks, we were more than ready to perform it.’

‘It’s like something being ripped away from you in the last second,’ the 65-year-old told the Mirror.

The pair’s new dance would have been performed to Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand, and they hope that fans will be able to watch it at some point.

Jayne added: ‘We are hopeful it will see the light of day next season.’

Christopher said: ‘It’s not the end of us yet!’

The 40th anniversary of their renowned Bolero dance, which resulted to them earning Olympic gold in Sarajevo in 1984, will be celebrated next year, and fans may get to witness them execute it for the final time.

Christopher said: ‘You never know, there might be some version of it. We will sit down and talk with ITV, 40 years on is a milestone, we would be silly to miss that.

It may be the last time!’

Jayne told the magazine that her injuries was the result of a ‘dramatic’ accident.

She said: ‘I had kind of tweaked my arm the day before it happened and just felt a bit sore, you get these odd pulls and strains and work through them.

‘We were doing a lift that was part of our routine, and I said to Chris “Maybe we won’t do this today, this might pull on the tendon,” and he said OK, and then I said “No, it’ll be fine, let’s just do it” – and I felt it ping, it pinged like an elastic band and it was extremely painful.’

Her skating partner added: ‘Jayne came out of the lift in an awkward fashion, and I couldn’t help her, so we ended up crashing down into the edge of the ice rink, it was quite a dramatic exit. As you get older, falls hurt more, that’s for sure.’

Jayne had previously described her injuries, which occurred during a lift and resulted in a fall.

When host Phillip Schofield questioned about the injuries, the 65-year-old reassured viewers that she was ‘fine’ – but there was no fast cure, and an operation was necessary.

‘Talking of things going wrong on the ice, I’ve ruptured my bicep tendon so I’m going to need surgery,’ she explained.

‘But I’m fine and will be back on the ice soon,’ the ex-Olympian added.

The Vivienne, Joey Essex, and Nile Wilson will compete in the final, after Mollie Gallagher and Siva Kaneswaran were eliminated.

Dancing on Ice: The Final airs Sunday at 6:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
