Jamie Lynn Spears’ interview on Good Morning America may have divided fans but her body language appears to confirm that her emotions were ‘genuine’ when speaking about Britney Spears.
Britney’s sister had appeared on the US show to discuss her upcoming memoir, Things I Should Have Said, and the apparent rift that has appeared between them since the conservatorship was lifted.
Jamie Lynn broke down in tears during the conversation, in which she insisted that she had ‘only ever loved and supported’ Britney and ‘done what’s right by her.’
Communication and body language expert Judi James believes Jamie Lynn did convey genuine sadness at the breakdown of her bond with Britney, nut believes her ‘cautious’ nature could be learned behaviour from her childhood.
She told Metro.co.uk: ‘Overall she looks incredibly sad, sitting low in her seat so that the padded shoulders of her jacket seem raised to neck level and there is often tension showing in her hands and her feet as she speaks on some of the topics.
‘The kind of wide, social, performance smiles that she and Britney sported when they were younger are gone, to be replaced by a much sadder facial expression.
‘Her eye expression is especially hard to fathom and it is only when they start to fill with tears that we get a hint of what level of emotions might be going on behind them.’
Judi spotted a shift in Jamie Lynn’s demeanour when talk turned to father Jamie Spears, who was Britney’s conservator for 13 years.
She explained: ‘Jamie Lynn describes herself as ‘pretending’ during her younger years and her body language here suggests some residue high levels of caution when it comes to revealing her emotions or even speaking in a more spontaneous way.
‘When the topic of her father comes up we can see some body language leakage. Her hand clasp on her lap seems to tighten and her upper foot starts a metronomic ritual, tapping away slightly in mid-air.
‘This tension looks suppressed as though she is trying to mask her inner emotions in a way that she must have learned during her phase of ‘pretending’ as a child.’
Judi says Jamie Lynn’s body language when speaking about Britney’s years in the conservatorship conveys confusion on her sister’s part, adding: ‘Even when she speaks about being happy she manages to look sad.’
Although speaking openly about the issues the Spears family have faced, Judi believes Jamie Lynn is attempting to exercise ‘self-control’, explaining: ‘The subject of Britney’s conservatorship prompts more signals of tension.
‘Her long blink or lid-close when she says she tried to help her sister is used for emphasis although her lip tension increases and her lips suck inward slightly as she says about Britney that “…she has to walk in that door…” In the hand clasp we can see the knuckles whiten, suggesting a desire to self-control.’
Britney has recently called out Jamie Lynn numerous times, alleging that she did not speak up for her during the conservatorship, despite Jamie Lynn’s insistence she did everything she could to help.
Jamie Lynn said during the interview: ‘I’ve always been my sister’s biggest supporter, so when she needed help I set up ways to do so.
‘I went out of my way to make sure that she had the contacts she needed to possibly go ahead and end this conservatorship and just end this all for our family. If it’s going to cause this much discord, why continue it?
‘It wasn’t about agreeing [or disagreeing] with the conservatorship. Everyone has a voice and it should be heard, so if she wanted to talk to other people, then I did, I set that up.’
Judi believes the tears that come when Jamie Lynn speaks about Britney are real, adding: ‘Her emotions do seem to overwhelm her as she says “I love my sister.”
‘Tears appear quickly when she talks about a rift and the upset looks genuine as she dabs them away rather than letting them fall to ramp up some drama for the cameras as she might do if she were acting.’
