A comedy series that’starred’ celebrities using deep fake technology has been cancelled.
Deep Fake Neighbour Wars, which premiered in 2022, converted comedians and impressionists into renowned faces such as Adele, Kim Kardashian, Olivia Colman, and Greta Thunberg.
Instead of enjoying luxuriously in the public glare, they were ordinary individuals from the United Kingdom’s suburbs fighting over small local conflicts.
Many fans called the six-part series ‘hilarious,’ but the use of AI technology frightened many others out.
Nicki Minaj weighed in after learning that her alter ego worked as a dog walker, was married to Tom Holland, and lived in Cheshire.
‘HELP!!! What in the AI shapeshifting cloning conspiracy theory is this?!?!! I hope the whole internet get deleted!!!,’ she posted on social media.
Although the show was later shown globally, ITV has confirmed that there are no plans for a second season.
In a statement an ITV spokesperson said: ‘There are no plans for new episodes of Deep Fake Neighbour Wars.’
‘The full series will remain on ITVX for everyone to enjoy and sits alongside the many other comedies on the streamer,’ they added.
At the time of the show’s released, ITV’s Head of Comedy Nana Hughes said that the show’s visuals ‘will fascinate, the world will titillate and the impressions will fixate’.
‘It is hugely exciting to bring AI technology to quite literally change the face of comedy on ITVX.’
However, last year, Idris Elba was asked how he felt about being featured in the event after Adele’s management contacted him to inform him that both artists were slated to appear.
‘I didn’t realise it was a whole TV show,’ he admitted.
‘And Adele’s team weren’t too pleased about it.
‘We weren’t too pleased about it because they didn’t ask our permission or anything and the next thing you know, it’s on TV,’ he added when speaking to The Hook.
He said that the deep fakes were quite ‘scary’.
The broadcaster has also shelved the sitcom Significant Other, which starred Katherine Parkinson and Youssef Kerkour as neighbours who form a tentative relationship after being pulled together by traumatic life events.
‘Significant Other was a great addition to the comedy season on ITVX last year but sadly it won’t be returning for a second series. We’d like to thank the cast and crew for bringing the show to our screens,’ the ITV spokesperson said of that series.
Despite the cancellations, ITV has other releases in the pipeline, including the return of Alan Carr’s Changing Ends, and the premiere of a police comedy called Piglets.
Deep Fake Neighbour Wars is streaming on ITVX.
