While Bridgerton fans eagerly await word on when season 3 will be released, they have the perfect treat to enjoy in the meantime.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story will be available on Netflix on May 4, with Golda Rosheuvel and India Amarteifio heading the cast as the eponymous princess.
The Queen has been a popular favourite from her first appearance on Bridgerton, meticulously picking the Diamonds of the social season while monitoring the Ton’s matchmaking.
Viewers who haven’t read Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton books may be wondering if the royal is as important in the pages as it is on the show.
Here’s what you should know.
Is Queen Charlotte based on the Bridgerton books?
While the original Bridgerton series is based on Julia’s books, the new prequel spin-off series focusing on Queen Charlotte is not.
In fact, Queen Charlotte herself does not appear in the novels, despite her pivotal role in the first two seasons of Bridgerton.
Shonda and Julia co-wrote a new novel titled Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which will be available a few days after the Netflix drama begins.
‘Despite never appearing in Quinn’s original novels, Queen Charlotte was invented to flesh out Shondaland’s on-screen universe of Bridgerton,’ according to the Shondaland website.
While Queen Charlotte was a real person, Shonda has stated that the character at the centre of her new series is a fictional interpretation of the historical figure.
‘Although Queen Charlotte is a real historical figure, this is not a history lesson. It is very important that people understand that, because I’m telling the story of Queen Charlotte of Bridgerton, not of Queen Charlotte of England,’ she told The Express.
‘I loved delving into the romance between Charlotte and King George, it was really fascinating. I also wanted to show people what that kind of love is like, even though they already know how it ends up. I thought it was a real challenge.’
Where is Queen Charlotte set in the Bridgerton timeline?
While Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a prequel, it actually spans two time periods.
On the one hand, the show transports viewers back in time to when Charlotte was chosen as the suitor to marry King George III of England, forcing her to leave her native nation of Germany against her will in order to complete the marriage, which turned out to be a strong match.
