Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway was praised by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in the Pride of Britain Awards broadcast for the extraordinary way she has dealt with her husband’s Derek Draper’s long battle with Covid-19.
Kate first revealed that her husband Derek, with whom she has two young children, was admitted to hospital with coronavirus back in March.
After a six-month long battle against coronavirus, Derek is reportedly now the ‘longest of any patient in the UK’ to be hospitalised because of the virus.
Although Derek no longer has Covid-19, the long lasting affects of the virus on his body left him hospitalised and needing a ventilator.

Although Derek is now off the ventilator, over 215 days after being hospitalised for Covid-19, he is still in hospital and ‘very, very weak’, according to Kate, who also said that in terms of her husband’s health and prospect of leaving hospital ‘ there is a long road to go and we don’t know how far down that road he can come.’
Speaking to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on GMB today Kate revealed that Derek had showed some progress in hospital after being able to mouth a word to communicate with his doctors:
‘What’s happened is that during the whole course of it all the medical teams, who have done such great care to keep him with us, have been very respectful and have always talked to him like he can hear everything, through the whole thing, as I have, as the children have, as his mum and dad have, we kept on taking to him.
‘They said, ‘Right we are going to move your arm, we are going to move your leg’ – because obviously that is part of the process so he doesn’t seize up, frankly. Every time they would say, ‘Let us know if there is any discomfort or any pain’. And he very clearly mouthed the word ‘pain’. ‘
She continued: ‘It is a huge breakthrough although it’s obviously heart-breaking because obviously he feels pain, which we don’t want… but what it means is he has been able to connect a sensation in his body, with his brain and to connect that with his mouth to shape the word pain.’
