A firefighter who appeared to be living his ‘dream’ profession had his world flipped upside down when he was visited by a ghost.
Chris Sanders had always wanted to be a firefighter and save victims in terrible tragedies.
But he had no idea it would all turn into a nightmare.
In Eli Roth’s A Ghost Ruined My Life, Chris tells his experience for the first time, saying, ‘I’ve seen a lot of things on the job, but nothing terrified me as much as this.’
The paranormal activity began when Chris was stopped on his way to work by a man named Robert, who told how he wanted to be a fireman but had never completed the necessary examinations.
Chris offered Robert a conversation at the fire station, thinking little of it as he went about his day, hoping to help him but assuming he wouldn’t see him again.
‘I was hoping for a relaxing day at the fire department, typical day,’ Chris recalled, before his team were called into an emergency.
When it came to deadly incidents, Chris and his coworkers had one rule: never make eye contact with the corpse.
‘They can cause a lot of nightmares, night terrors for us, that kind of thing.’
Chris, on the other hand, disobeyed the rule when he realised who was murdered in the automobile accident – Robert, who miraculously resurrected in horrific scenes.
‘When I recognised that this was the guy I had the conversation with in the morning, I was run with emotions. My heart was racing really bad,’ Chris says.
He was left ‘shaken’ after witnessing Robert jump out at him, begging for help.
‘I thought, he did survive, but I had to come back to the realisation that he was really dead.’
Upon returning back to the fire department, Chris witnessed some strange occurrences with flickering lights and strange sounds.
‘I had no idea my life was about to turn upside down.’
Chris returned home that night ‘depressed’ and wanting to move past the incident, but feeling like he ‘didn’t know where to turn’.
When he heard awful screams from outside his house and the lights continued to flicker, he realised he wouldn’t be able to go on so simply.
‘I was freaked out,’ he thought, but still didn’t think it would get ‘that bad’.
‘It really wanted me to know that something was there and it needed attention.’
As unusual occurrences continued to occur over the next days, Chris’ relationship with his partner Ava began to be harmed, as she refused to believe anything was happening on, leaving him feeling even more ‘alone’.
‘A lot of things happened in our home that were unexplained, and she would blame it on me.’
In Chris’ words, Ava, a cynic, would observe some instances but ignore them, leaving him angry that they didn’t agree.
Meanwhile, he was having trouble sleeping at night due of the mysterious ‘being’ in his home.
He peered into an open closet one night and believed he saw an eye peering back at him.
A second event occurred when the shower tap became significantly hotter without Chris touching it, and the word ‘Liar’ was scrawled in the bathroom mirror.
‘It really freaked me out,’ Chris admitted in a confessional. ‘It started getting more aggressive.’
As his terror continued, Chris finally understood what had been haunting him.
‘I realised that the spirit haunting me was the driver from the accident, Robert.’
He adds: ‘I felt like I was stuck in a terror.’
Things only started to get worse.
Chris had dreams of being in an accident and Robert lighting him on fire, only to wake up and see Robert’s ghost.
‘Things were getting worse. I didn’t know what to do.’
Chris took the difficult choice to take time off work to safeguard his mental health because he couldn’t bear remembering the experience any longer.
However, the terrors persisted, and he was plagued to the point where Ava abandoned him, believing he was the source of all the tension in their home.
‘It was very traumatising and upsetting,’ Chris recalled.
‘I wanted to move on and it allow me to live my life.’
With few other options, Chris decided to contact Robert’s sister, whom he had met by chance earlier, in the hope that they might work together to figure out why Robert’s ghost was bothering him and what they could do to put the spirit at peace.
They organised a séance to discover why Robert’s spirit was so enraged, only for the ghost to explain that it was because of Chris.
When faced by the spirit, Chris was left asking him to ‘let go,’ stating that there was nothing he could have done to rescue Robert.
‘I felt a big relief,’ Chris recalled, saying he wanted Robert to move on, so he could too.
‘I never thought it was giong to be as bad as it was. It was the first time anything like that has ever happened to me, it was the first time a spirit attached itself to me and caused a lot of chaos and pain.’
Chris is now always afraid that another ghost may attach itself to him.
‘I’ve recovered from the haunting, but I don’t believe I’ll ever recover from the incident.’
