Former Top 10 contestants are apparently being sought for the forthcoming series of I’m A Celebrity.
The ITV reality programme, which puts celebrities through tough jungle challenges to acquire basic necessities like food, will return to our screens in November of this year.
It’s usually a noteworthy event, and last year was no exception, when former health minister Matt Hancock entered the jungle, shocking fellow candidates and the country as a whole.
The disgraced MP finished third in the series, after Lioness and Queen of the Jungle Jill Scott.
The former MP got £320,000 for his on-screen escapade, but the channel’s investment definitely paid off.
Mr Hancock drew a lot of attention as a passionately discussed public figure following his contentious handling of the Covid-19 outbreak.
The ITV show’s final in 2022 had the highest rating since 2018, and the series as a whole averaged 11.1 million viewers across all devices and platforms. Not awful at all.
Now, it has been reported by The Sun that another politician – who is even an ex-Prime Minister, albeit from a historically short tenure – is being targeted to appear on the show.
That’s right, it’s Liz Truss, who served as Prime Minister for 49 days before abruptly resigned after a genuinely frightening mini-Budget proposal prompted economists to drop their jaws on the floor and the pound to fall.
A source told the publication: ‘After seeing the effect of having former health secretary Matt Hancock on the show last year, bosses were keen to repeat the feat in the new series.
‘High-level politicians are virtually guaranteed to create controversy in the camp – which equates to compulsive viewing for fans at home.’
‘Having signed up Matt in 2022 and made an approach to Boris this year, jungle producers realise they have nothing to lose by targeting the biggest names in Westminster.’
A spokesman for ITV told the publication: ‘Any names suggested for I’m A Celebrity are speculation.’
This comes after it was revealed that Boris Johnson was given a huge sum of money to appear in the series but declined.
It remains to be seen if Ms Truss will come on the programme, but we’re betting that if she does, a lettuce will survive longer…
