The first trailer for How I Met Your Father has dropped, and we’re already obsessed.
It was recently announced that a spin-off to How I Met Your Mother would be heading to our screens soon, and will be released in January, on Hulu.
In the new teaser, Hilary Duff, who plays Sophie, can be seen leading the cast as they try to make sense of the modern dating scene in New York, complete with apps and hook-ups galore.
‘This is the story of how I met your father,’ a voice over from Sex and the City’s Kim Cattrall – aka future Sophie – begins.
‘It was hard to live in the moment in 2022, there was always someplace else you could be, someone else you could be with…’
The camera then pans to the present day character telling her pals: ‘I know this might sound crazy but I’ve been on 87 Tinder dates this year. My last date was the worst one yet…’
‘It’s really hard to meet someone and connect and have it feel easy,’ she insists as we’re introduced to the rest of her crew, including Chris Lowell as Jesse, Tien Tran as Ellen and Valentina, played by Francia Raisa.
Despite the many dalliances, she’s clearly not put off as she declares on the subway: ‘Today is the chapter of my next great love story’.
But who exactly is the father of her future family? We’ve already got our eyes peeled.
Fans were left a little divided over the trailer, as some are still upset over the controversial way that the original series ended.
Flocking to Twitter, one commented: ‘I have full body chills… I’m so beyond excited.’
‘I want to like this but don’t want to see another show end so badly like How I Met Your Mother did,’ another said.
‘Looks promising but I hope they learned their lesson with that awful HIMYM ending,’ a follow begged.
A Twitter user added: ‘I’m so psyched for this show and hope that it doesn’t disappoint because HIMYM is so dear to my heart.’
According to the official synopsis, the gang ‘are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options’.
The 10-episode season will have a similar format to the original show, starring Neil Patrick Harris, Josh Radner, Cobie Smulders and Alyson Hannigan, but it’s not yet known whether it will connect to the original sitcom.
Confirming her role in a statement, Hilary previously said: ‘I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie.
‘As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother, I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter [Bays] and Craig [Thomas, show creators] would trust me with the sequel of their baby.
‘Isaac and Elizabeth are brilliant, and I can’t wait to work alongside them and all of their genius.’
‘I realize these are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my 6 ½’s in there!’
How I Met Your Father will premiere on Hulu on January 18, 2022.
