Holly Willoughby might need to work on her paper plane throwing skills.
The This Morning star faced off with co-host Phillip Schofield at the Red Bull Paper Wings competition during Monday’s episode of the ITV daytime show with Gyles Brandreth overlooking proceedings.
The duo were joined by UK champions Billy Smith and Yicheng Sun, with the pair showing the presenters how things were done before Phil and Holly took their turns.
‘Here comes Holly Willoughby,’ Gyles commented, before Holly shrieked as her handmade plane ended up soon boomeranging and landing on a crew member’s camera.
‘You couldn’t make it up. It’s extraordinary, it actually goes into reverse,’ Gyles laughed. ‘So Phillip seems to be the new UK champion, and Holly seems to have actually come back to the starting point.’
Phil looked rather pleased with himself, while the two UK champs looked on.
The duo helped Holly and Phil design their own paper planes, and offered some tips on creating the perfect handmade craft.
‘You can’t rip it, glue it or anything, it just has to be folded – that’s the only way it can be held together. It has to look something like a plane,’ Billy explained.
‘Start by just folding it in half length-ways… unfold it back again, and then fold the top corners down to the line… The exact same for the other side of it as well.’
He revealed some competitors go for particularly ‘fancy’ designs, and Yicheng noted it all comes down to how they want the plane to fly.
‘There are quite a lot of different designs for different types of flight,’ he added, while admitting he’s already figured out his plans for next month’s world championships, where they’ll compete in distance, airtime and acrobatics categories.
‘I definitely have, it’s a secret. I can’t disclose it now,’ he teased.
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
