According to rumours, certain cast members of Netflix’s smash Heartstopper are trying to utilise their “star power” to enhance their contracts.
The romantic comedy-drama, which just ended its second season, has maintained its popularity among viewers following its blockbuster first season.
Heartstopper follows Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) as their romantic relationship grows as they attend an all-boys school.
The second season has likewise been a big success for the streaming site, with excellent watching statistics backing up critical acclaim.
This appears to have led the show’s ensemble cast to reconsider their decisions, as their degree of renown has altered dramatically since the first episode.
A source has explained the rumoured developments: ‘The cast were all unknown when they landed their roles – they signed contracts worth next to nothing.’
Speaking to The Sun, they continued: ‘No one knew if the show would be a hit and it was a low budget production.’
If Heartstopper took off and Netflix proceeded to renew the programme, the contracts reportedly locked the cast members in for three seasons.
Season two would be rewarded with a 5% salary raise, according to agreements said to have been set during the epidemic.
According to the insider, ‘even with the rise, the cast are still getting paid a fraction of what their star power now commands.’
Kit Connor, Yasmin Finney, and Joe Locke have all found profitable jobs since becoming stars as a result of their work on Heartstopper.
Yasmin, in particular, has emerged as a breakthrough star, with her position in Doctor Who officially confirmed with the return of showrunner Russell T. Davies to the series.
Joe has been cast in the upcoming Disney Plus TV series Agatha: Coven of Chaos, while Kit has added two more projects to his already impressive resume.
One of the films, A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow, is based on a novel, while the other, One of Us Is, is a thriller that began production early this year in Belfast.
