Heartstopper season 2 is nearly here, and fans are eager to find out what happens next for Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) in their love story, as well as the other lovely members of their touching gang.
While those who have read Alice Oseman’s webcomic series and graphic novel may have a sense of the story’s trajectory, the writer and illustrator – who also authored and designed the Netflix TV series – has teased a sequence in an upcoming episode that will be wholly new to book readers.
During a recent chat, Alice expressed her excitement to see the scene in question come to life on film, noting how ‘beautifully acted’ the performers were.
The writer also hinted at how the second season will differ from the first, with the heroes getting up to ‘all kinds of trouble’ while away from their parents on a much-anticipated school trip to Paris.
‘I won’t spoil it, but there is a really beautiful scene at the end of episode three that is not at all in the comics, and I was really excited to see that come to life,’ Alice said of the scene that will be completely unfamiliar to those who have read their written Heartstopper works.
‘It’s just a quiet scene where Nick and Charlie have a conversation, but it’s a kind of big turning point in their relationship and their understanding of each other, and it’s so beautifully performed by Kit and Joe. I’m really excited for people to see that because it will be a surprise. It’s not something that’s in the books. So, yes – can’t wait.’

By the end of season two, the main characters in the tale have developed and achieved new phases in their friendships and love relationships… So, what can fans anticipate from the newest installment?
‘I think season two, the world just feels bigger for our protagonists,’ Alice shared.
‘We step outside of the little school environment, and as many people know, the teens will head off on a school trip to Paris – big city, the city of love. They’re kind of out of the prying eyes of parents and they can get up to all kinds of mischief.’
The creator of the Netflix show continued: ‘In terms of the relationships, Nick and Charlie, they decided that they’re boyfriends and now we really get to see them enjoying being in a relationship, which we didn’t see a lot of in season one, because it was like, “Oh no, does he like me? Does he not like me?” It’s so awkward and nervous.
‘In season two, they are solidly a couple and they get to really, really enjoy that. We see their relationship levelling up a little bit, and the same for the supporting characters as well.’

In the season two teaser, Nick tells Charlie, his new lover, that he wants to come out publicly as bisexual, but it’s ‘hard’ to ‘find the time’.
Charlie swears to defend his golden-retriever-energy lover because he knows what it’s like to be tormented after being outed before he could come out on his own terms.
The relationship between Elle (Yasmin Finney) and Tao (William Gao) has sparked much discussion, with fans wondering if the best friends may ever get together.
Meanwhile, it appears that Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) may encounter some difficulties in their relationship, while the group’s quietest member, Isaac (Tobie Donovan), embarks on an illuminating trip of his own.
Heartstopper season 2 premieres on Thursday August 3 on Netflix.
