Happy Valley fans convinced they’ve sussed out identity of Tommy’s dad – and it’s not who you would expect

Happy Valley viewers believe Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) is connected to another character, which would be yet another setback for Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire).

The tough cop was taken aback when she learned that her grandson Ryan (Rhys Connah) had been paying visits to his horrible father, who is currently doing time in prison for murder.

Catherine blames Tommy for her daughter Becky’s death, as she committed suicide immediately after he raped her.

Catherine was taken aback when she realised Ryan had two accomplices who had been escorting the teen to prison. She was perplexed as to why Ryan would want a relationship with the criminal.

The shocking revelation in episode two was that Catherine’s own sister Clare Cartwright (Siobahn Finneran) and lover Neil Ackroyd (Con O’Neill) were the perpetrators.

Rather of confronting her family, Catherine followed the trio to Sheffield to establish with her own eyes that the illicit visits were taking place before joining her startled sister in a cafe.

However, many have speculated that there may be a hidden reason why Neil and Clare have been sneaking Ryan to see Tommy behind Catherine’s back, assuming Neil is related to the psychopath.

Many Twitter users have speculated that Neil is Tommy’s father, which would explain why he was willing to coordinate the visits.

Several fans also noted out that Catherine was hell-bent on finding out who Tommy’s father was in a prior season of Happy Valley, but the solution was never given.

Others recalled Neil ‘bumping’ into Clare on the street before they started dating, saying it may perhaps have been a calculated action.

‘Neil definitely has connections to Tommy. I don’t think he bumped into Claire in the street by accident either,’ a viewer summed it up.

A Twitter user added: ‘I recalled these bits from the 2nd season: Police never found the killer of TLR’s mother, did they? Did Neil relapse because of his past costly affair, or because of TLR’s mother’s murder? With @spiceyw’s writing, there’s never a coincidence. #happyvalley.’

Siobahn has previously hinted at what fans can anticipate from This Morning episode 3, warning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield that there would be a lot to take in.

‘All I can really say about it is I think you’re going to have to tighten your seatbelts for episode three,’ she said.

In other news, Happy Valley’s return after seven years has been a big success, even outperforming Prince Harry’s bombshell interview with Tom Bradbury on ITV on Sunday night.

Happy Valley continues on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
