Si King, star of Hairy Bikers, has spoken about the ‘distressing’ and ‘tough’ time he went through after his co-star Dave Myers was diagnosed with cancer.
Dave, 65, announced last year that he was being treated for cancer, joking that he would be a “baldy biker” for a while.
In following updates, he claimed to be “sort of doing well,” while treatment was still “ongoing,” and he greeted 2023 by claiming cancer was “something one learns to live with.”
Si has now talked out about learning about his TV partner’s condition and the struggles they endured in a recent interview.
Dave learned of his condition while on vacation in France with his wife and immediately contacted Si after hearing the doctor’s remarks.
‘I was driving. I had to pull over,’ Si recalled, looking back at the ‘distressing’ call in March, last year.
Talking about how difficult the past year has been for them both amid Dave’s cancer battle, he continued: ‘It’s so distressing. It’s very difficult to verbalise.’
Si said to The Times: ‘There’s a sense of loss, but there’s also that sense of hope, you know, knowing my mate as I do.
‘He’s a scrapper. He’s a fighter. But there were certain points that I thought, “Where’s it going to go? What is happening to my friend?”‘
During chemo-therapy sessions, of which he has had ’30 lots’ with ‘one little bit left’, Si went to stay with Dave.
‘He was very, very, very unwell,’ he added to the publication.
‘And it’s funny, you know, when you see somebody you love so much in so much distress, it’s very hard to know what to do.
‘My character and personality is naturally, I just want to fix it. I just want to fix it. I get very distressed when I can’t.’
Earlier this year, Geordie motorcyclist and popular gourmet shared details of his ‘brutal’ chemotherapy treatment, revealing he’d lost’so much weight,’ struggled with losing his appetite, and could barely manage a can of soup.
He also said that he had to ‘learn to walk correctly again’ when chemotherapy damaged his balance, which he described as a “disaster for a motorcyclist.”
As Dave makes a “big stride back to normalcy,” the couple is returning to work and our screens with a new series.
The eight-part series The Hairy Bikers Go West will follow the duo as they enjoy the food and people of Britain’s west coast.
‘It’s unbelievable to be back. Every breath I take now is just refreshing and fabulous. It varies really what food I’ve been having,’ he said.
Dave told The Mirror that the beloved couple are back in the studio filming a new TV show, calling it a “big step back to normalcy.”
‘It’s a work in progress and it’s all going the right way. I’m getting there and I’m back on the bike,’ he shared.
