In an interview, Golda Rosheuvel discussed the efforts made to ensure that the actor portraying the younger version of her Bridgerton character closely resembled her.
Golda, 53, has captured the hearts of ardent viewers all around the world as the regal, assertive, and elegant Queen Charlotte, based on the true historical queen whose dominion began in the 18th Century, ever since the first season of the hot Netflix period drama was out in 2020.
India Amarteifio, 21, will portray the younger version of the title character in the prequel series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which will explore the early years of her reign alongside her husband King George III.
During a discussion about the upcoming spin-off on Tuesday’s The One Show, Golda and India were joined by hosts Alex Jones and Emma Willis in the BBC One studio. The former revealed how much care was taken to ensure that their portrayals of the queen at various points in her life were consistent.
‘One little thing I can say is can you see the difference here, can you see any kind of difference?’ Golda said, pointing to her face while sitting next to India on the sofa.
‘The little moles,’ Alex responded, as the actress went on to explain: ‘So, I have little moles, which were cast. They made two casts and in the show, India has the moles.’
The programme’s hosts praised the “amazing” attention to detail, and the co-stars emphasised the importance of Queen Charlotte’s narrative.
‘[Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is] not the world that we see in Bridgerton, at all. And I think that’s what’s great about Queen Charlotte, is that it sets the foundation for Bridgerton,’ India explained.
‘We find out why society is so diverse and beautiful. She is a 17-year-old girl. Historically, came from Germany, didn’t speak any English, to marry a monarch, the most powerful monarch of the time.
‘[She] was coming into a society where she is the only person of any kind of ethnic minority in such a high status.’
Queen Charlotte’s accession to the English royal family, according to Golda, “changed the dynamics” of their universe.
‘It’s kind of like the behind-the-scenes of Bridgerton,’ she said, while India added: ‘It brings two segregated societies together.’
The Queen Charlotte prequel has a number of well-known characters, including Lady Danbury, who was previously portrayed by Arsema Thomas and Adjoa Andoh.
Ruth Gemmell reprises her role as Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton, while Connie Jenkins-Greig makes her acting debut as the character’s younger self, back when she was known as Violet Ledger.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is due to premiere on Thursday May 4 on Netflix.
