Sandra Martin and Sandi Bogle were scouted for the Channel 4 show despite being ‘legless’.
The original actors, who rose to stardom in 2013 after starring on the series’ inaugural episode, were out celebrating their 50th birthday outside their South London home when they were discovered by producers.
As a consequence, the managers got a good look into their personalities and were keen to hire them both.
Sandi, 58, explained: ‘We were legless, because it was her birthday, so that way you’ve got the full characters of us both together. It was right place, right time.’
But the couple weren’t immediately persuaded on the notion of the programme and thought it was ‘rubbish’ when it was offered to them.
Sandi continued: ‘We was a bit tipsy, so we was like, “What is he talking about?”
‘Sandra was just like, “Take over, take over, because I don’t understand what he’s talking about. He‘s talking rubbish. What is this people watching TV, watching us, watching them? It doesn’t make sense.”’
When they won a position on the Gogglebox sofa, their lives were turned upside down.
Sandra, who was unemployed at the time, burst into tears after receiving the job.
The 61-year-old added to The Sun ‘They said, “All you’ve got to do is sit down, order a big pizza, and watch TV.” Oh my God, I started to cry. I told the socials, “I’ve got a job now” and I cried.’
The couple spent three years on Gogglebox together until 2016, when Sandi, 58, left the programme to pursue other employment options, including a stint on Celebrity Big Brother.
Sandra eventually left the show in 2018, although she has expressed sorrow about her decision now that she is back on benefits.
Gogglebox airs Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
