Gogglebox’s Pete Sandiford broke down in tears as he watched an emotional moment on The Repair Shop which involved the restoration of a Jewish prayer book, that had once been owned by a guest’s grandparents who survived a World War II concentration camp.
The Channel 4 star, 26, who appears as a TV sofa critic with his sister Sophie, was watching Jay Blade’s The Repair Shop when he was overcome by emotion.
The programme saw Gary Fisher bring a ‘fragile’ Jewish prayer book to The Repair Shop barn, in the hope that the family heirloom could be restored.
Gary explained that his grandparents, who had once owned the prayer book, were taken to a concentration camp in Czechoslovakia during World War II, and tearing up, stated that his grandparents were ‘very lucky’, recalling other family members who had been murdered in the concentration camps.
Gary said: ‘My grandfather wrote a poem, but when they were liberated, he asked people [survivors] that were liberated to sign the book, so there are about 50 signatures.
‘It’s so fragile – I think it needs to go somewhere where it can be seen by others.’
Sophie and Pete watched as Chris restored the book to its former glory, and said, before undertaking the challenge: ‘This book serves as a reminder of one of the darkest sections of humanity. I am more worried about this than I have been about most books, it’s just so epic.’
Pete began tearing up when Gary returned to collect the book, telling Sophie: ‘Why am I already welling up here? I’ve not even seen the bloody book.’
He later couldn’t hold back the tears, as Sophie said: ‘God, he is breaking my heart.’
Viewers were just as emotional, with some taking to social media to share how moving the scene was.
One wrote: ‘I don’t generally cry over TV or films, but I’ll tell you what, team, I’m welling up after that Repair Shop segment,’ while another penned: ‘What is it with the Repair Shop that gets you every time, that prayer book on Gogglebox is the most moving thing this year, I appear to have something in my eye AGAIN.’
Gogglebox continues next Friday at 9pm on Channel 4.
