The Gogglebox actors were honoured with the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award at Thursday night’s National Television Awards, but the party had clearly began hours before.
Jenny Newby, 67, and Lee Riley, 65, of Channel 4 fame, ascended the stage with their co-stars, but as they proudly led the thank-you speech, they had a confession to make.
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, hosted by Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! This sparked controversy this year due to Matt Hancock’s time in the jungle and The Masked Singer.
‘To beat two people down here is unreal,’ Lee began during the speech, before hinting that he and Jenny were actually a better duo than Ant and Dec.
He joked: ‘There must be a better duo! Wow!’
‘I’m speechless! No way were we going to win [over] you, no speech, no nothing!’
Lee then confessed: ‘Three vodkas in the hotel room and I’m thinking, I’ve got to do a speech.’
He then thanked Studio Lambert and everyone who collaborated on the show.
‘Ten years of Gogglebox and we’re still here!’
Lee also paid respect to others who were unable to attend, including late Gogglebox actors June and Leon Bernicoff, Pete McGarry, Mary Cook, and Andy Michael.
He said: ‘To all the families, who aren’t here and the ones who passed away.
‘They’re still in our thoughts.’
An emotional Jenny took over the mic to say thank you too, adding: ‘I’ve enjoyed doing this television programme for 10 years.
‘It’s been wonderful, and I’d just like to say, I’ll be at yours on Friday, 9 o’clock, stick the kettle on!’
In other news, Ant and Dec maintained their Best Presenter winning record, receiving the prize for the 22nd year in a row.
While speaking in the winners’ room, Ant said: ‘We are friends first and foremost and the TV shows come after that.
‘So I think at the heart of it when you’re watching us, you know, it’s a true friendship.’
He added: ‘We love each other’ to which Dec quipped: ‘A bit soppy’.
Gogglebox is available to watch on Channel 4.
