Jonathan Groff, the former Glee star, has joined the swelling ensemble of BBC’s Doctor Who for the upcoming season.
The 38-year-old will appear in a’mysterious and intriguing guest role’ with previously revealed Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa, Coronation Street’s Millie Gibson, and RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon.
Jonathan rose to prominence in 2010 after landing the part of Jesse St. James in the musical comedy drama Glee.
Since the programme concluded in 2015, he has received international praise for his efforts on-screen, including roles as Eric in the box office blockbuster Knock at the Cabin and Holden Ford in the critically acclaimed series Mindhunter.
He is also well-known for his big voice acting parts in the Frozen movie, most notably as Olaf.
Jonathan has also earned a name for himself on Broadway, where he wowed audiences as King George III in Hamilton, for which he received not only a Tony Award, but also a Primetime Emmy Award for the live stage recording.
Speaking of his new role, Jonathan says: ‘I am so thrilled to jump into the extraordinary mind of Russell T Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role!’
Showrunner Russell added: ‘This is an incredible coup, and a great honour, to get such a huge star striding on to our set.
‘So strap on your space boots, this is going to be a blast!’
Ncuti’s first scenes as the Fifteenth Doctor will appear later this year, but not until Tenth Doctor David Tennant makes a triumphant return as the… Fourteenth Doctor. Are you still with us?
Fans of Doctor Who have already seen the first images of newcomers Ncuti and Millie.
Millie and Ncuti have both dressed up for the recent photos, with Ncuti sporting a stylish blue and white pine stripe suit.
Meanwhile, Mille’s outfit is a black and white tiny dress in the manner of the late Mary Quant, with matching boots.
Doctor Who returns in November on the BBC and iPlayer.
