The possible Game of Thrones spin-off based on Kit Harington’s character Jon Snow is no longer in development, but fans have a plan to revive it.

The actor claimed that it’s ‘off the table,’ citing a challenge to find the proper tale to tell.

After the original series finished in 2019, fans were ecstatic to learn three years later that a sequel was in the works.

The HBO project would have let fans to catch up with Jon, who was condemned to the Night’s Watch for killing Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) to prevent more damage.

While there would have been several opportunities to pursue in the following chapter of the imaginary character’s life, it was not to be.

Kit stated why he’d never previously spoken about the project until now: ‘I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen.’

While speaking to Screen Rant, he explained that while in development they ‘look at every angle’ to ‘see whether it’s worth it’. They’ve now concluded that it isn’t and so it’s ‘off the table’.

‘We all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being,’ he sais.

‘There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.’

News of the shelving spread quickly within the fan group, and they devised a strategy to resurrect the project.

Gibbsy 816 suggested on Reddit that they wait for Jon Snow to mature before continuing where they left off.

‘Personally I like the idea of waiting some time and then picking up the story with an older Jon Snow. You can explore what happened in the intervening years.

‘I do think they’ll need to figure out what they could do with Jon that is really interesting. He’s already united the wildlings, ventured north of the wall, there’s no (apparent) threat from the others anymore.

‘I’m sure they could come up with something but I think it’s probably for the best they let this one sit for a while before they come back to it,’ they concluded.

The concept seems to be well-received, with over 90 individuals voting up and zero voting against.

‘I would actually be really down for this,’ chimed in Recovered Ashes.

NickWangOG suggested a potential title (we think): ‘Somehow Night King returned.’

Game of Thrones ended after eight seasons, with the final episodes proving polarising, and viewers were not hesitant to express their displeasure.

One of the sticking issues was how Jon Snow’s story ended, especially his exile to the Night’s Watch despite being the legitimate heir to the Iron Throne. The ‘unsatisfying finale’ might be given another shot in any resurrection, although any story gaps may need to be addressed.

Although there hasn’t been a Game of Thrones sequel, there have been two seasons of House of the Dragon and The Winds of Winter is in production.

Kit is starring in Mary’s Monster, a film based on author Mary Shelley’s mental health struggles while creating her novel Frankenstein in 1818. He married Game of Thrones co-star Rose Leslie in 2018, and the pair has two children.

Game of Thrones is available to watch on Sky and NOW.
