Lorraine Kelly had the heebie-jeebies when Fatima Whitbread detailed her notorious I’m A Celebrity moment when a cockroach climbed up her nose – even producing the bug.
The 62-year-old Olympic athlete competed in the show’s new all-star spin-off, I’m A Celebrity South Africa, finishing third as campmate Myleene Klass became the first Jungle Legend.
During her first appearance on the ITV show in 2011, the British javelin thrower was involved in one of the show’s most memorable incidents when a cockroach became lodged up her nose.
Fatima needed help flushing the creepy crawly out of her nose, and after the performance, she opted to retain the insect she dubbed ‘JB’ by keeping it in a paperweight.
On today’s broadcast of Lorraine Kelly’s ITV show, the former professional athlete recalled feeling the insect’s ‘furry tiny legs’ inside her nose, leaving the presenter writhing in her seat.
Lorraine, 63, chuckled as she introduced Fatima’s ‘little buddy,’ then screamed when the former campmate recounted the ‘iconic’ I’m A Celebrity experience.
Fatima said the creature was stuck for 40 minutes inside her nose, adding: ‘I spoke to Doctor Bob and said to him, “Where will this thing come out?” And he said it can either come out of the ears, the nose, the mouth, or my eyes.’
Lorraine looked horrified by the idea of the cockroach crawling around inside Fatima’s face, saying the experience would give her ‘nightmares.’
Fatima went on to claim that when she visits schools, youngsters are more interested in viewing the renowned cockroach than in hearing about her sports achievements.
‘Of course, their moms and dads remember me as an athlete, but it’s not about the medals for the youngsters, it’s about the cockroach,’ she continued.
She also discussed how her 14 years in the foster care system provided her the’steely attitude’ she believes she had to participate in the programme not once, but twice.
Fatima stated that due of the number of children in her childhood household, you would have to ‘fall in order’.
‘In order for anything to work, you have to have good values, good beliefs, and, you know, steely strength. And I think I’ve got all that,’ she continued.
Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
