Ewan McGregor insists daughter wasn’t cast in Obi-Wan Kenobi because of him: ‘She auditioned for the role’

Ewan McGregor has opened up about how his daughter Esther-Rose McGregor bagged a part in his Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi, revealing that she auditioned on her own accord.

When episode 2 of the show dropped on Disney Plus, several people immediately recognised Esther, appearing as a spice dealer called Tetha Grig.

In the scene that she shared with her father, Tetha offered to sell Obi-Wan spice, as he pleaded for any information she might have on the whereabouts of Princess Leia (Vivian Lyra Blair) after the child went missing.

During an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Ewan, 51, was asked how it felt to act alongside his daughters, having also appeared in a film with his other daughter, Clara McGregor.

‘It’s extraordinary,’ he replied. ‘I played a few scenes with Esther in the Star Wars series.’

The Trainspotting star then brought up the fact that many people might have assumed that Esther was only cast in Obi-Wan Kenobi because of his involvement – which he refuted.

‘I’m sure everybody thinks she got the job because of me, but really she didn’t,’ he said.

‘She auditioned for the role and sent it in and Deb [Deborah Chow], the brilliant director, said to me, “I’ve found this great girl, but she turns out to be your daughter. Are you happy with that?” And I said that’d be amazing.’

Ewan said Esther was ‘brilliant’ in the scene, adding how it ‘felt really normal and natural’ to work with her.

Ewan was married to Esther’s mother, production designer Eve Mavrakis from 1995 until 2020, when their divorce was finalised.

The former couple share four daughters together, two of whom were adopted. Esther, who was born in November 2001, is 20 years old.

The Obi-Wan actor married Scott Pilgrim vs The World star Mary Elizabeth Winstead this year, having welcomed their son Laurie in June 2021.

In the new Star Wars series, the Jedi Master ends up coming face to face with his former Padawan, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), following his transformation into Darth Vader.

Having believed Anakin died 10 years ago when the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith unfolded, Obi-Wan is still traumatised by the past, before embarking on a rescue mission to save Princess Leia.

However, Darth Vader and his Inquisitors, including the menacing Reva (Moses Ingram), are hot on their tail.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is available to watch on Disney Plus with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
