Emma Mackey, the star of Sex Education, has indicated that she believes the popular Netflix series should be cancelled.

Season four filming has begun, with Asa Butterfield and Emma resuming their roles as Otis and Maeve.

Ncuti Gatwa, who will appear with Gillian Anderson in the next season of Doctor Who, recently announced that he will be waving goodbye to Sex Education when he trades high school for the tardis.

And it looks that Emma is about to do the same.

The 27-year-old said: ‘It’s just always tricky, it’s different when you’re playing a character that is sort of stuck in time/

‘You know, we’re playing 17-year-olds, and we’re all almost 30, it is a bit weird.’

When asked how emotional it has been working with the cast, Emma said that the launchpad has been a “blessing,” but that “it’s something that I want to gracefully exit from, and be happy that it exists, and protect it, and enjoy it in the time that it has existed in, but yeah, I think it needs to be left alone now.”

She continued to Total Film: ‘We can all move on and take what we learned from Sex Ed as well because it has been a school, quite literally, for all of us.

‘It’s just wonderful to have had that education and to have that baptism of fire and to have just been flung into that whole world. I think it’s made us stronger.’

Emma’s comments follow Sex Education performers opting out before of the the fourth season, with Rakhee Thakrar, who portrays Miss Sands, saying: ‘I’m not part of the new series. I can’t really talk about why… There is nothing bad about Sex Education.’

Her name joins a long list of stars who will not be returning for what many believe will be the adolescent drama’s last season.

Patricia Allison, who portrays Ola in the show, said in a statement that she will not be appearing in season four.

Tanya Reynolds, who portrayed the alien-obsessed Lily, and Simone Ashley, who played Olivia, will both be leaving Moordale High.

“Following the demise of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier – their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College,” begins the synopsis for the forthcoming fourth season. Otis is worried about opening his new clinic, while Eric hopes they won’t be losers again.

‘But Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students — they thought they were progressive but this new college is another level. There’s daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe and a group of kids who are popular for being … kind?!

‘Viv is totally thrown by the college’s student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A Level and Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him.

‘Over in the U.S., Maeve is living her dream at prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her while adjusting to not being an only child at home, or the only therapist on campus.’

Sex Educations season 1-3 are available to watch on Netflix.
