Ellen Pompeo will be back on Grey’s Anatomy for season 19 despite very candidly admitting she is desperate for the hospital drama to end.

Ellen has starred as Meredith Grey since Grey’s Anatomy launched in 2005, with the likes of Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl and Patrick Dempsey all bowing out over the years and going on to huge success.

However, while most of the original cast has long gone, Ellen, 52, is still there after being promoted to executive producer for the upcoming season.

Also returning for a 19th season will be Miranda Bailey and Richard Webber, played by Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr., respectively.

‘I couldn’t be more excited that we get to keep telling the stories of Meredith, Bailey, Richard and all of the other doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial for another season,’ said creator Shonda Rhimes.

‘This is a true testament to Krista Vernoff, the cast, the crew and all the writers who keep the audience on the edge of their seat week after week. And it would not be possible without the generations of incredible fans who have supported Grey’s Anatomy for so many years.’

While it’s not exactly a shock to hear Grey’s Anatomy isn’t turning off its life support just yet, Ellen’s addition to the season is a little more of a surprise when just last month she told Insider: ‘I’ve been trying to focus on convincing everybody that it should end.’

‘I feel like I’m the super naive one who keeps saying, “But what’s the story going to be, what story are we going to tell?”’ she said. ‘And everyone’s like, “Who cares, Ellen? It makes a gazillion dollars.”’

Grey’s Anatomy returns to ABC later this year.
