Drew Barrymore left sobbing over emotional Hollywood reunion with ‘protective’ co-star

Drew Barrymore burst into tears after an unexpected reunion with former co-star Dermot Mulroney, thanking him for being her ‘protector’.

The 48-year-old rose to prominence after appearing in an advertisement before her first birthday, and she made her film debut at the age of five.

In 1994, she starred in the Western film Bad Girls starring Dermot, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Andie MacDowell, and the latter joined her on the set of her namesake talk programme, the Drew Barrymore programme.

Despite being the popular program’s presenter, she was shocked when Andie invited Mary to the stage for a catch-up, before crying at the sight of Dermot.

She quickly hugged the Scream 6 star, who muttered, ‘I’m so delighted to see you, I might weep.’

Drew began to cry as she expressed her joy at seeing her old friend again, complimenting his current picture, Anyone But You.

He offered her a tissue to wipe away her tears, then asked for half of it back to dab his own.

‘You were so good to me. I really was a lost 17-year-old,’ she declared, through sobs. ‘I was having so much fun, but I didn’t know how to take care of myself.

‘You took such good care of me. You were so kind to me and protected me.’

Addressing the crowd, she continued: ‘Dermot, he really took care of me. I mean, I was wild, guys. I was really, really wild.’

In response, he shared his delight at seeing Drew, deeming her an ‘incredible survivor’.

‘Sorry guys, I cry now,’ he added of his waterworks. ‘I knew I was going to and I came anyway. I decided, “I’m going to go ahead and cry in public.”’

Fair play.

Last year, on an episode of the Drew Barrymore Show, she discussed her partying days with Nicole Richie and apologised to her friend’s father for their shenanigans.

The couple grew up in the spotlight and had known each other for years, so they made trouble on the town when they were younger.

Speaking with Lionel Richie, he admitted that seeing them get into problems, along with Paris Hilton, was terrible as a dad.

‘If I lived through that I can live through anything,’ he recalled. ‘You all almost killed me.

‘So, I’m so glad you got it out of your systems.

‘I almost cut my system off if you know what I’m saying. I mean I almost lost consciousness.’

Reflecting on their wild younger days, Lionel wondered who would pay him back for all of the medicine he had used at the time.

Drew affirmed without hesitation, ‘Both of us will.’

Dermot may need to become engaged in that.
