Dr Hilary Jones has slated the landlord who threw Sir Keir Starmer out of his pub, suggesting he should ‘stick to pulling pints’.
Rod Humphris, who runs The Raven in Bath, appeared on today’s Good Morning Britain, where he cast doubt over whether lockdown measures work in the battle against coronavirus.
Speaking to Susanna Reid and Adil Ray, he explained his strong reaction to the Labour leader’s work during the global pandemic, stating that other countries have dealt with the health scare without complete lockdown.
However, Dr Hilary was having none of it, explaining the areas who locked down earlier and had more ‘sustained’ restrictions are in a much better position.
‘I think you should stick to pulling pints rather than advising the government about policy on the biggest pandemic public health issue for the last 100 years,’ he replied. ‘In India right now, 217,000 people a day are coming down with Covid-19.
‘Brazil – 852 children under the age of nine have died from Covid in the last six weeks, and 518 of them were under one-year-old. Babies are dying of Covid.

‘Now, if we ignore a pandemic, if we say lockdown doesn’t work, how do you think this spreads in the first place? It’s person-to-person contact. If you look at all the countries that locked down earlier and had more sustained lockdown, they’ve had better health outcomes and better economies.
‘Look at every peak that we’ve had, what happened when we had a peak of 1,200 deaths a day, we went into lockdown and the numbers came down, it’s very simple. You have to have lockdown in a pandemic that kills people.’
The landlord responded: ‘Firstly, as even I think Chris Whitty or [Sir Patrick] Vallance have acknowledged, when we’ve gone into lockdown, the infections have already been falling, so actually there is no established causal link – and this has been researched all over the world.
‘Causal link between lockdowns, and lack of deaths, not serious hospitalisations, is just not there.’
The health expert then questioned: ‘Would you like to tell me how it happens then, how numbers come down? It’s not vaccinations because it hasn’t had time to have an effect yet, but it will reduce hospitalisations and deaths.
‘But how do you think we got out of the first two peaks?’
When Rob referred to coronavirus as a ‘seasonal virus’, Dr Hilary added: ‘A seasonal virus? That’s been going on all year?’
In footage that has since gone viral, the pub landlord kicked Sir Keir out of his establishment after he fumed about the politician’s response to the pandemic.
‘Do you understand we have f***ed our economy because old people are dying?’, he asked.
‘You have failed me. I have been a Labour voter my entire life, you have failed to be the opposition, you have failed to ask if lockdown was functioning.’
At one point, he had to be held back by security as he yelled at Sir Keir to ‘get out of my pub’, insisting he wasn’t welcome in the bar.
