Dr Hilary Jones has angered some Good Morning Britain viewers after suggesting GPs who work three days a week work more hours than most people do in a full week.
GMB’s resident health expert Dr Hilary was back on the programme to discuss the rise in children contracting hepatitis.
The number of known cases among UK children under 10 has risen to 111, and he shared some advice about what symptoms parents need to look out for.
However, some of his comments annoyed those watching after he went into the challenges of working as a GP.
He told hosts Ed Balls and Susanna Reid: ‘A lot of patients are difficult, abusive, threatening… it’s not an easy job.
‘They should be the first line of people looking after public health, these are the people who keep people out of the hospital,’ Ed weighed in.
The medical expert continued: ‘It’s not an easy job, and what other profession would have to have people that they have to deal with?
‘They’re allocated patients who know one else would want to see. Now, that’s a rarity, I know that, but general practice is a difficult job.
‘While some doctors are doing three days a week, they’re doing more hours than most people do in a whole week,’ he commented.
Love Island star Shaughna Phillips brought the comments to the attention of her followers, asking: ‘Did anyone just hear what Dr. Hilary just said.’
She went on to clarify: ‘When he said that a lot of GP’s patients are abusive and rude, and when he said that even if GP’s did work 3 days a week, they would still be working harder than most people.’
A Twitter user replied: ‘What an a***!
Someone else weighed in: ‘Fro Dr Hilary say “even if a Dr is working only a couple days he is working more than an average person does in a week” is absolutely diabolical [sic].’
‘#gmb @GMB Doctors aren’t the only profession who work long hours and have a retention problem but I absolutely love my job and knowing I’m making an impact in someone’s life keeps me going….isn’t that why GPs also entered their roles too? We NEED more #doctors @DrHilaryJones,’ said a viewer.

Elsewhere on GMB, former Labour politician Ed was left red-faced after a Ukrainian refugee rejected his attempts at a high five and fist bump on-air.
The presenter sat down with a mother and son who had fled their hometown of Odessa, Ukraine, to the UK where they are now being hosted in Windsor.
As the interview then wrapped up, Ed attempted to give the young boy a high five – and then a fist bump – but he was left hanging.
