Look, The Simpsons sure seems to predict a lot of the world’s big moments, so it’s not a total leap in imagination to believe the show has predicted the Super Bowl 2022 winner days ahead of the game.
It all came bubbling to the surface after fans of the long-running Fox show (which ‘predicted’ a host of things from Donald Trump’s presidency to Lady Gaga’s own Super Bowl performance) believed the series pegged the Cincinnati Bengals to defeat the Los Angeles Rams at Super Bowl LVI this weekend.
A set of images, including Bengals cheerleaders, and Homer Simpson with ‘Go Bengals’ painted on his stomach, began to do the rounds on social media, as they’re wont to do, supposedly showing a score of 34 to 31.
The meme was made up of screenshots from three different episodes of the show, including one that had been digitally altered after originally featuring a news broadcast of a game between the Bengals and the Miami Dolphins, from season three episode, Lisa The Greek.
The post on page @NFL_Memes has racked up more than 80,000 likes, we assume from a whole host of Bengals fans, trying to manifest this outcome ahead of the big game, which will also see Mary J Blige, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre and Kendrick Lamar perform in the Half Time show.
But, sadly, we have to whack a big, fat false on this ‘prediction’. So please don’t ‘Bet the house on the Bengals’.
Look, it’s a 50/50 shot but should the Bengals come out on top on Sunday it’s not down to the oracle of Matt Groening’s mind.
That’s not to say the long-running animation hasn’t aired scenes that appeared to come true several years later, much to our continued whimsy and delight.
From Trump’s chaotic presidency through to the Covid pandemic (the latter being branded ‘gross’ by the show’s writer, we should add), the series has been cited with getting an awful lot correct about the real world, even if the links were, at best, tenuous at times.
We also have Lady Gaga’s performance at the Super Bowl Half Time Show (and her jumping from the roof), faulty voting machines, and the legalisation of cannabis in Canada.
Do we have this Super Bowl win? Sadly, no.
