Derry Girls writer Lisa McGee has shared a touching tribute after the show’s dog Toto died.
As fans will remember, Toto is Erin Quinn’s (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) dog which was the focus of a memorable storyline in the third episode of the acclaimed comedy.
Sharing the news on Twitter, Lisa said the pet – real name was Slipper – was a ‘Derry Girl in dog form’.
‘Sad to hear that wee Slipper aka Toto passed away. You were a Derry Girl in dog form. Rest in Peace.’
Toto will be well known to fans of the show for a starring role in the first series.
Episode three follows the girls as they see Toto on the street after believing it to have died in a traffic accident, chasing it into a local church where it proceeds to urinate on a statue of the Virgin Mary – with the girls mistaking the urine as tears, thinking the dog has been reborn.
It’s a favourite episode among fans, and viewers on social media were quick to share their thoughts after Lisa broke the news.
‘One of the best episodes ever RIP Slipper. Cracking name,’ one wrote.
‘Bless her – hope she’s having a blast in doggy heaven,’ another said.
Meanwhile, Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, who plays the lovable Clare Devlin in Channel 4’s Derry Girls, previously confirmed that filming for season three of the comedy is due to begin later this year.

The show previously suffered a huge delay as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak, with the programme – which is set during The Troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1990s amid conflict between Catholics and Protestants – put on hold until the entire cast could return to the region.
It comes after one of the stars of Derry Girls voiced their concern that the cast will be too old to play schoolgirls in the show after the hit series was struck by filming delays during the pandemic.
In December 2020, Nicola teased that season three would be well worth the wait, describing the scripts for the new episodes as ‘phenomenal’.
