Dermot O’Leary claimed that he began anchoring This Morning on Monday with only three hours of sleep after presenting Soccer Aid the night before.
Following Phillip Schofield‘s resignation from the show, the 50-year-old TV personality will co-host the ITV morning show with Holly Willoughby for the next two weeks.
Dermot co-presented the charity football match at Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium on Sunday evening with former footballer Alex Scott before heading to the couch on Monday in London.
Discussing the football match with Dermot, Holly said: ‘Firstly, it was an amazing night. Secondly, are you OK because you were in Manchester, you’re now sitting on the sofa, how much sleep have you had?’ to which he confessed it had been only three hours.
‘I did wake up this morning and my first initial thought was “Mum, I don’t want to get to school today”,’ he added.
They also said that Dermot’s makeup artist had a ‘unique approach’ of waking him up that entailed submerging his head in an ice bath.
After showing a video of the method, he added: ‘It’s like downing a Slush Puppie so you get this amazing brain freeze.’
As the show began, the duo remarked on how they hadn’t worked together on the show since 2014, when Dermot filled in as a presenter.
Reflecting on a photo of them together from this time, Holly said: ‘This is nearly a decade ago … You look exactly the same. I’ve got a lot more hair which probably isn’t mine.’
She added: ‘It’s good to have you back.’
Dermot has been co-hosting This Morning on Fridays with Alison Hammond since they took over from Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford in 2021, after previously acting as a guest presenter on the show.
He has also recently filled in as host on the show with Alison when Phillip stood down as presenter of the ITV chat show with ‘immediate effect’ after more than 20 years on the show and while Holly was on half-term break.
Phillip, 61, resigned from ITV this month after confessing to a ‘unwise but not illegal’ romance with a younger male colleague.
The network has now commissioned an external inquiry to ‘determine the facts’ surrounding the connection.
