Denise Welch has told how she made Tom Cruise laugh so hard that he burst out laughing when she took the stage at Sir Michael Caine’s milestone birthday celebration.
The British cinema star turned 90 earlier this month, and he celebrated with close friends including David Walliams and his wife Shakira Baksh.
Denise, who came with her husband Lincoln Townley, was requested to say a few words to the attendees at one point during the evening, and while she was first hesitant, seeing Dame Joan Collins receive some chuckles encouraged her to do the same.
The 64-year-old explained on Wednesday’s Loose Women that she decided to ‘personalise a few jokes and pretend that they’re about Michael and Shakira’ because she didn’t have many stories of her own to tell about Sir Michael.
The TV host revealed that Shakira interrupted to say, ‘that never occurred,’ as Denise tried to stop her from ‘ruining’ the piece.
‘There’s a story that I’m telling here that I can’t repeat, but one of the stories was that as you get older you start talking about age a lot. Basically, Lincoln had said, “At 50, sometimes when I go for a wee, nothing happens.” And another friend in their 70s said, “Sometimes I want to go for a poo, and I sit there and nothing happens.,”’ she told the audience in the ITV studio.
‘And this old mate of ours who’s about 90 said, “Well what about me? Every morning at 6am I have a wee, and every morning at 6.30am, I have a poo.” And we said, “Well what’s wrong with that?” He said, “I don’t wake up till 7.”
‘I looked around and Tom Cruise was literally crying with laughter, [wiping his eyes] with his napkin going, “You’re killing it, you’re killing it.”’
‘So either I was really on form that night or Tom Cruise goes to the most boring meals,’ she continued after sharing a photo with the Top Gun star at the party. But it was an honour to be a part of it, and he’s simply stunning Tom Cruise, a great person.’
On Instagram, Denise wrote about the bash: ‘Such an honour to be asked by Shakira to say a few words at Sir Michael Caines’ 90th birthday!!!
‘He loves a dirty joke and so does @tomcruise it appears!!!! Great night and amazing company.’
