Death To 2020 star Leslie Jones had no qualms telling Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker that she’d never watched his hit Netflix series.
The comedian, who is set to feature in his new project alongside the likes of Friends’ Lisa Kudrow and Stranger Things’ Joe Keery, revealed that she thought the dystopian show was a ‘broke down ass Twilight Zone’ and had previously avoided seeing it.
Speaking at the Death To 2020 press conference alongside Brooker and her co-stars, Jones confessed: ‘I had never seen Black Mirror before, I’m so sorry.’
‘We’re all friends here,’ chuckled Brooker.
‘People were telling me to watch it and I was like, “Ah, that’s probably a broke down ass Twilight Zone, I don’t want to see that sh*t”,’ Jones continued.
Jones added that she finally managed to catch up with Black Mirror, but was left disturbed by the White Christmas episode, which tells the story of a man who is blocked by his partner, leaving her as nothing but a silhouette in his life.
‘It freaked me completely out because I don’t understand the blocking thing,’ she said. ‘Because my thing is if you block somebody, can’t they still beat you up? It don’t matter if you see them or not.
‘You blocking me don’t mean nothing if there are still images coming at you, I’m still going to beat your ass. You can block me all you want to but you can’t block these fists.’
Jones concluded: ‘All of that man freaked me out. So when they sent me the scripts, I was like, “Oh, I want to read this script”.’
Jones is set to play behavioural therapist Dr Maggie Gravel in Brooker’s Death To 2020, which is set to be released next week.
Death to 2020 features fictional characters discussing real events in a bombastic mockumentary.
It’s not mocking or making light of what comprised it but rather it finds the humor in the absurd and awful.
Death To 2020 launches Sunday 27th December on Netflix.
