David Boreanaz weighs in on whether Buffy The Vampire Slayer should have ended up with Angel or Spike

David Boreanaz has revealed his opinion on whether Buffy The Vampire Slayer should have ended up with Angel or Spike in the series… and unsurprisingly, he’s team Angel.

The actor, 51, who played Angel opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy in the hit show, is the latest star to speak out on which vampire the slayer should have ended up with.

The debate began when politician and Buffy fan Stacey Abrams tweeted that while Angel had been right for Buffy in the beginning, Spike, played by James Marsters, was the one she rightly should have ended up with.

She wrote: ‘To be fair, Angel was the right boyfriend for Buffy coming into her power. Spike was the right man to be with as she became the power.’

Show creator Joss Whedon replied: ‘I AGREE! (during squee)’, while Alyson Hannigan, who played Buffy’s best friend Willow, added: ‘I’ll vote yes to that!’ before joking: ‘Actually Buffy should have dated Willow.’

David, however, doesn’t agree with the general consensus, telling The Wrap in a new interview: ‘All I’ll say is this, man: True love is first love and first love is true love. Drop the mic. End of story.

‘I don’t think we need to continue. I mean, it’s pretty simple, right? Let’s think about that for really a second. Your first love is your true love, your true love is your first love. End of story.’

He added: ‘All due respect Stacey Abrams, I disagree. But you know, hey, you’re coming from the character’s mouth here. I think I’ll be the final word on it.’

The show ran from 1997 until 2001, with Buffy dating Angel in the first three series, before David left the show to star in the spin-off Angel.

Down the line, Buffy started to get feelings for Spike, who had initially been planned to be a minor villain in the series, before becoming the slayer’s love interest.

While Sarah and James have yet to share their opinion, James tweeted: ‘@staceyabrams you are a national treasure, and you have very good taste in television!’
