Daniel Radcliffe has stated unequivocally that he has no intention of appearing in the next Harry Potter television series.
When he initially appeared in the franchise’s first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, in 2001, he was just 10 years old.
He would go on to perform the part in seven more films over the next decade, culminating with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011.
It was revealed in April that a TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s books was in the works, but Daniel has since said that he would not be appearing.
‘My understanding is that they’re trying to very much start fresh, and I’m sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere,’ he has said.
‘So I’m definitely not seeking it out in any way… but I do wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world, and I’m very excited to have that torch passed,’ he added when speaking to ComicBook.com.
He went on to say that he ‘didn’t think it needs me to physically pass it’.
HBO drove fans into a frenzy when they announced the announcement of the small screen adaptation.
‘Your Hogwarts letter is arrived,’ claimed the streaming site in a tweet.
‘Max has ordered the first ever #HarryPotter scripted television series, a faithful adaptation of the iconic books. #StreamOnMax.’
The same week HBO’s chairman and chief executive officer of content Casey Bloys said they were ‘delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way’.
‘Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and JK Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.’
Rowling, an executive producer on the project, said that the platform’s ‘commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me’ and that she was ‘looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series’.
HBO has suggested that the programme will last for a decade, with each season based on one of the novel series’ seven volumes, and that it will have a completely new cast.
While Daniel will not appear, he is definitely very busy right now with the birth of his first kid.
Three months after girlfriend Erin Darke, 38, gave birth, the actor announced the gender of his child this week.
Speaking to ET, he said of fatherhood: ‘It’s great. It’s crazy and intense, but he’s wonderful and Erin is amazing.’
‘It’s a real privilege also to have this time with him.’
He also stated that he had taken some time off to spend some time with his family and was ‘having a terrific time’ doing so.
