Cobra Kai’s Hawk doesn’t hold back when it comes to sparring, and has become known as one of the most vicious fighters on the show – but unfortunately for actor Jacob Bertrand, it appears he’s not so indestructible behind-the-scenes.
Ahead of the launch of season three of the Karate Kid follow-up on Netflix, Jacob and castmates Xolo Maridueña (who plays Miguel) and Mary Mouser (who plays Sam) shared some awkward moments where the violence on-screen accidentally spilled over.
All in the name of fun, Jacob revealed he ended up with a literal punch in the face from Xolo when a game went more than a bit wrong.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, he explained: ‘The only time that I’ve actually been hit, we weren’t even doing stunts!
‘We play this game where you try to make someone flinch by fake punching them, and if they flinch you get to hit them.
‘I don’t flinch, basically, is the moral of this story. Xolo was in front of me, and he tried to do this punch, super fast backfist me in the face, not purposely, and thought I was gonna flinch back and I didn’t.
‘He just obliterated my nose! And it wasn’t even for a fight or anything. That’s actually the only time there’s ever been a mishap. At least for me.’
Mary admits that while she also finds herself covered in bruises during filming, ‘most of them were self-inflicted’ as she joked her clumsiness is her biggest downfall, and caused some painful moments.
‘I have more than my fair share of mishaps,’ she joked. ‘I’m a clumsy enough person before they gave me stunt work, and it just doesn’t get any easier.
‘Luckily in the show they keep challenging us to do something new and something bigger and something crazier. So naturally my clumsiness gets bigger and crazier.
‘I’ve had a couple of injuries, all pretty much completely on my own. Messed myself up. Misblocked a kick and hyper-extended three fingers backwards once. Had to go to the ER but it was all clear! All good.’
While the cast are looked after, in the show it’s turning into all out war as Kreese (Martin Kove) takes over Cobra Kai and turns the students into merciless fighters.
While Johnny (William Zabka) and Daniel (Ralph Macchio) try and figure out how to fix the mess they created, the kids are spiralling further out of control as they take justice into their own hands.
With Miguel already recovering from a broken back and being laid out in a coma, he now has to figure out how to walk again, let alone fight.
Can the opposing dojos put their differences aside before someone gets killed?
