Christopher Eccleston joked that he would only reprise his role in the TV series of Doctor Who when ‘hell freezes over’.
Christopher, who last played the Time Lord 15 years ago, is currently recording an audio version of Doctor Who titled Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures
However, during an appearance on Tuesday’s Lorraine, the host couldn’t help but quiz the 56-year-old on whether he could ever return to the series.
‘I’m on my way to do the second day of recording of the audio adventures of the Ninth Doctor for a company called Big Finish, and it’s written by an excellent writer called Nicholas Briggs – who’s also the voice of the Daleks,’ he told the host.
To which Lorraine asked: ‘You can do anything with Doctor Who. He always regenerates, he’s never gone back.
‘I don’t want to say degenerates because that sounds bad but he’s never gone back, but he could or she could?’
‘You could go back to you, you could pop up,’ she added.
‘Well, that’s what I am doing at the moment in audio form,’ Christopher replied.
‘I know what you’re getting at, Lorraine, but… only when hell freezes over.’
Yesterday, the actor shared a picture of himself holding the new script from the audio drama, confirming beyond all doubt that he’s stepping inside the Tardis once again.
The script is for the first volume of the Ninth Doctor Adventures, which has the title of Ravengers.
After gaining such a strong following from fans from his time on the show, it’s a delight for many to see him back in character.
Christopher previously said about returning as the Doctor: ‘It will be exciting to revisit the Ninth Doctor’s world, bringing back to life a character I love playing.’
The Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures series will be released across four box sets which will be available on CD and vinyl, as well as for digital download.
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
