Charlotte Hawkins took on the role of mediator in the middle of a heated Brexit debate this morning.
The Good Morning Britain presenter, alongside co-host Alex Beresford, watched on as commentators Femi Oluwole and Andrew Pierce clashed just hours before Boris Johnson was expected to announce the Brexit trade deal – or lack thereof – at a press conference.
Addressing the breakthrough news, Andrew said: ‘Our Prime Minister has had a shocker of a year, he’s not handled Covid particularly well, he nearly died back in April, he ends the year having done a deal.
‘Of course he’s not going to please his own party, he can’t please his whole country, he’ll never please Femi because Femi is passionate about remaining in the European Union but the deal is done and most people will wake up so relieved that that’s the case.’
Femi began: ‘It’s funny that you mentioned the public consent, you’ve got major contingents of those who voted Brexit…’
However, Andrew interrupted: ‘Femi, there was a referendum in 2016.’
When Femi insisted: ‘I know,’ Andrew hit back: ‘No you don’t, you never accepted it… Here you go again.’
Femi then calmly asked Andrew to let him finish but the newspaper editor refused and continued to interrupt, muttering: ‘Yeah, yeah.’
Later, Andrew told the activist: ‘As I said people like you Femi have never come to terms with the result, you’ve got to get over it, my dear.
‘Get over it. Get over it love. Happy Christmas to you. He’ll be whinging on about this for another 20 years.’
Charlotte then stepped in to settle the tense situation and said: ‘We want a little bit of Christmas cheer on this front. We are waiting for the announcement.’
Femi also lightened the mood and replied: ‘I’m wearing a Christmas jumper,’ to which Charlotte said: ‘On the subject of Christmas cheer.
‘You are right you’re wearing a Christmas jumper and Devi [Sridhar] you’re looking very festive in your Christmas jumper.
‘Andrew I can’t help but notice that you’ve let us down on the Christmas jumper front.’
In less of a Christmas mood, Andrew replied: ‘I don’t own one but if I have known the Brexit deal would be definitely done by Christmas Day I would have gone out and bought one yesterday just to upset Femi.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
