Charlie Brooker, the creator of Black Mirror, admitted that his attempts to compose an episode incorporating ChatGPT failed terribly.
After a four-year break, the highly anticipated fifth season returns to our screens this month, with Salma Hayek, Aaron Paul, and Annie Murphy joining the cast.
There will be plenty of storylines that examine the influence of technology on our lives, but the chatbot’s opportunity to be recognised for an episode did not make the cut.
‘I’ve toyed around with ChatGPT a bit,’ he said.
‘The first thing I did was type “generate Black Mirror episode” and it comes up with something that, at first glance, reads plausibly, but on second glance, is s***.
‘Because all it’s done is look up all the synopses of Black Mirror episodes, and sort of mush them together,’ he added when speaking to Empire.
He added: ‘Then if you dig a bit more deeply you go, “Oh, there’s not actually any real original thought here.” It’s [1970s impressionist] Mike Yarwood — there’s a topical reference.’
He did, however, claim that ChatGPT exposed some of his show’s repeated cliches, encouraging him to be even more experimental.
‘I was aware that I had written lots of episodes where someone goes “Oh, I was inside a computer the whole time”. So I thought, “I’m just going to chuck out any sense of what I think a Black Mirror episode is”.
‘There’s no point in having an anthology show if you can’t break your own rules.’
He described the experience as being a ‘sort of nice, cold glass of water in the face’.
The teaser for the new series was unveiled last week, with fans being warned to ‘expect the unexpected’.
The official synopsis reads: ‘Expect the unexpected. The long-awaited return of Charlie Brooker’s dark, satirical anthology series which reinvents itself with each new episode.
‘The sixth season of Black Mirror is the most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected yet.’
Josh Hartnett, Rory Culkin, Rob Delaney, Zazie Beetz, Michael Cera, and Paapa Essiedu are among the other stars expected to appear.
Black Mirror season 6 premieres on Netflix on June 15.
